I not fully sure what the EX is for, but I think that this is what it stands for.

Honda use the X for all their sport based three wheelers, like the ATC200X and the ATC350X. When Honda came out with a sport based fourwheeler they keeped that going in the TRX250X. When Honda updated the TRX250X with bigger cc's and added electric start, they added the E for that.

Honda's all out race bikes have had a R after the name like the ATC250R, TRX250R and the TRX450R. When Honda added electric start as a option to the TRX450R, those models are called TRX450ER.

And notice Honda currently has a TRX250, known as a Recon, and a TRX250EX, which is a sport base version with electric start.

That sounds right but I wonder why the 400ex wasnt called the 400er. It had almost the same performance as a bone stock trx250r. Suspension and width was pretty close to the same.

Yeah, but if you throw a Civic engine into a Ferrari Modena is it still a sports car?

Just restating what others have said.

X
EX
R
ER

E = E-Start
X = Sport (usually Air cooled)
R = Racing (usually Water cooled)

u can't compare the stock 400ex to the stock 250r, the 400ex was built for a sport quad not a race quad like the 250r. which is why the 400ex is ex instead of er.

btw thats why the 400ex does not have 250r geometry(SP) as far as anyone in the public knows.

The 400ex specs out nearly identical to a 250r with a slight edge in suspension travel and width going to the 400ex. And an edge in wieght going to the 250r . Im not sure either could be considered a "race " quad in stock form.
