88 suzuki 230 top end rebuild

Im new at working on these small motors and My 230s needs a top end rebuild. Im getting a kit for that but my question is, is there a chain that runs through the top end? How involved is the rebuild? Im very mech inclined, just never worked on a small engine before. Will I need to re time the engine? take out the cam?
Any help is very appreciated.

Thats your timing chain. You will need to retime the motor after a top-end rebuild.

how does one go about re timing the engine? any special tools needed?

IF i remember correctly there is a line on the cam gear and a line on the cylinder head move the cam gear around on the chain to line up the lines then bolt it back to the cam.
