Here we go again, went to the races, took both quads, DRR wouldn't pull the hills again, the predator pulls the hills great,so I switched the clutches, both front and rear clutches from the predator 50 to the DRR50, all seemed well till his practice, then it puked on the hills so we switched wheels from the DRR to the Predator and he raced the Predator, he won both motos from the holeshot to the finish, he is beginning to get a swelled head, but back to my problem, it acts like it doesn't want to shift back into a lower drive on the hills, but everything works fine on the Predator, I can't tell what is going on,it is an air cooled 2006 50 DRR, I am more apt to think it is losing power, maybe as it warms up it is losing compression, I don't have a compression gauge so I came home tonite and put a new set of rings in it and it seems to run good, but my son is already in bed, sooo, he can't ride tonite, the plug looks great and is light tan in color, but the lower part of the pipe is turning really dark, any ideas would be appreciated

Are the motors, pipes, carbs, and sprockets the same?? sounds like you are on the right track with compression. You have ruled out clutching, could also be in the jetting.

We had something similar happen… it was the stupid throttle limiter screw tightened itself down
You couldn’t tell by looking at it, only reason I figured it out is my son set on the quad why I was working on it and pushed the throttle…

if your preddy 50 has the stock cyl and pipe on it , it is making its power in the range of 6500to 7800 rpm and is clutched accordingly, the DRR 50 cyl and pipe makes power in the 7800 -9200 rpm range and would need to be clutched for this range , so swapping clutches didnt really tell you much. To eliminate clutch from the equasion spend 36$ and get new rollers and -T-Spring that are known correct combo for your application. If you are running the stock carb (16mm Mukuni) it is most likely to rich on the pilot curcuit (main jet sounds right)which can be corrected with a jet change . I think for about 50$ it will out perform your Preddy and make you very happy.

You said the head pipe is getting really black. Are you sure that you dont have a leak there at the header gasket. I had that happen and I could not get mine to run good. A new gasket and it was a different animal.

change the stock kill switch if it has the stock one still on.......... my sons 2008 water cooled drr was bogging on both ends and wouldnt go up hills or anyplace far, everyone thought it was a jetting problem finally someone told me to change the stock kill switch and his quad has run great ever since. just a suggestion ..

Just installed a new gasket a couple of weeks ago, all is tight, leaning towards jetting still, after talking to Gary and Marc...

Did you remove the electric start on the DRR?

What are you running, jet sizes, and needle clip position?

OK, electric start has been removed along with the starter gears, my current jetting is a 25 pilot, a 105 main, and the clip on the needle is at the second from the bottom, I am going to put the needle at the lowest setting, drop to a 20 pilot and try a 100 main, I will keep you informed..Thanks for all the help...

sounds like a good plan.

Have you replaced the space behind the variator when you removed the starter wheel?

If not this could be your issue

Yes, I put a spacer in there, the same width as the starter gear.

Yeah, I'm digging a thread up from the grave.... :D
Did you ever find out what the issue was?
