ive wanted to build a drag quad for a while now, so here goes.

Frame - 400ex to be modified
a-arms - +2 JD performance std travel
shocks - still in the air, gotta test some stuff
swingarm - 450r +8" with wheelie bar
brakes - no front/450r rear with S.S. line
plastics - white fullbore drag cut
axle - stock 450r (for now)
steering - chrome Roll design with 7/8 clamp and drag bars
ENGINE - 800cc polaris most likely

im using a 400ex frame which i will most likely have to modify but its a good starting point. i used a set of 300ex shocks to lower the bike and still give me a little suspension for the bad woop sections where we drag. im going to have them resprung with stiffer springs if possible. i mounted the rear shock like a no-link setup which gave me the desired drop but it will be strutted before i run it. i will be using no brakes on the front. im going to cut or grind the aluminum spindle assembly to smooth them and reduce weight as much as possible. for the rear of the quad i will be using a 450r setup due to the better brake system and ive got a +8" swinger ive been saving for it anyway. im going to weld tabs onto the swingarm that will mount reinforcement bars that will connect to the top of the rear of the frame for more strength. im waiting on the axle and carrier to come in which will give me a rolling chassis. im still looking for some paddles that can handle that kind of power, im leaning toward some 22x11x8 16 paddle haulers but im not sure if that will be enough.

Are you trying to make this some sort of a budget build? I wouldn't run the rear end like that. A properly setup rear end utilizing the linkage that is supposed to be there will transfer weight and power a LOT better than that setup you have there.

What motors are you looking for? I would think a twin would be a better choice for lower weight and for sheer size of the motor. Should be pretty cool though. I've seen a few quads with sled motors in them and they rip!

no, not really a budget build, just mocking everything up right now and the 300 shock had the right length to get the quad level. its going to be strutted and im going to reinforce the swinger to the frame. i decided against the triple 1000, its too big. i found a 670cc twin that pushes 137hp stock that im going to use (much lighter). plus 8 swinger and a wheelie bar.

thanks for commenting!

yes, actually. also at LA dunes and i believe there is another place north of alexandria that has a big drag meet annually.

its been a while, things have been crazy. i got the bearings in the plus 8 swinger and installed it on the bike. i got the pegs, the rims, a works rear shock sprung for a 250lb rider MX and im only 170 so thats gonna help with hookup, some plus two standard travel JD performance arms, 450r tapered carrier, axle, rear brake system, anti-fade nut and all the other little parts for the rear end. its coming along, im gonna post some pics tonight or tomorrow.

you mention that you have a works shock valved for a 250lb rider when you only way 170 and that you will have a good hookup? Im no rocket scientist on quads or nothing but how the hell you gonna "hookup" if you cant transfer any weight to the back of the bike because your shock is valved to stiff? Personally i think your gonna get to much wheel spin. although some is wanted but you need to have weight transfer too. Its just my opinion Im not tryin to bash or dog on your project. I got one brewing as well. Good Luck!

as far as i know the valving is only for the type of riding you do, the spring is what carries the weight. if i put a rear shock sprung for my weight on the bike its going to bottom out when i throw 130HP at it. im going to need something really stiff to keep the bike from squatting and wanting to come up (when im at the sand drag which normally has some BAD whoop sections) otherwise it will be strutted with a wheelie bar. most SERIOUS drag bikes ive seen are solid strutted in the rear, so how is having a stiff spring going to hurt me?
