i've got this '88 R that has a lonestar stearing stem and +2" a-arms on it and am having problems with the outter tie rod end hitting the a-arm on both sides before the bump stops ever make contact at the stem and frame. it even appears as tho the nuts have hopped over the a-arms with the previous owner/s. any of you have any idea as to whats going on with this.

Welcome to the wonderful world of aftermarket arms. My Houser +1+1 also do that. I assume it's due to the +1 forward design.

Nevermind. I just remembered it's the wheels that rub the arms, not the tie rod ends.

I had that problem with a set of +3 arms and 86-87 spindles and hubs. Switched to 88-89 spindles and hubs and problem is gone. I believe the steering arm hight is diff from early to late spindles.

I had this problem with my houser plus 2's and walsh plus 3's. It only happened when shocks were fully extended and wheels cranked. I had 87 oem frame. Now I have arens frame 89 spindles and some plus 2 hre arms, still does it. Stem's stops look to be in good shape and this is a new stem. I thought about extending the stops a tad but want this bike to manuever in tight trails. :(

With all this said, it wouldn't happen with rider weight and usually doesn't happen that often. You would have to have it on two wheels and the bars cranked.

I really don't think its a big deal.

I just read your post again, both my stems have been LSR as well.

Maybe that's the culprit. Any others have this problem?

i see there's alot of possibilities as to what may be going on here. i have different year parts that i can compare with. including stock stems. i'll just have to swap stuff out till i figure it out. i deffinately aint going to be running it much as it is now. :eek2:

dayum skippy!! and i aint referring to the scared part either. sand bars are soft enough but tend to be quite abrasive added to that, my older body dont heal as fast as it once did. lmao besides i have others to ride in the mean time. ;)

lonestar stem and+3 arms and I have the same problem if i turn sharp (without rider). I think the steering stops on the stems are a little short.
