Honda 10-40w motorcycle oil in a red bottle.

I've been using the Valvoline 4 stroke motorcycle oil it was like $3.86 a quart my last oil change. I was using the 10w - 40 but since its so hot where I ride and the 400ex always wanting to run hot because its air cooled I switched over the the 20w - 50 and the motor stays much cooler now. I used to run synthetic but I couldnt afford to pay for all of that nice stuff anymore.

Well i was using HP4M - with moly 10w-40, but since i have heard bad things about it through these threads i will be switching to another oil not sure if i am going to stick with honda brand or go to another like Spectro.
Honda brand seems a little expensive.

Was using GN-4 10w-40 in cooler months and 20w-50 in the summer months.

My last oil change I switched to Honda's Gold Bottle w/red cap. 10w-40

How is your clutch holding up with that? Do you have HD clutch springs at all?

I have some old Mobil 1 15w50 "red cap" that is discontinued that i'm going to finish up. No "energy conserving" on the seal on the back of the bottle, so no friction modifiers.

I haven't dared to run the new Mobil 1 15w50 (gold cap). You're the first i've heard that is running it in a motorcycle engine.

I recommend 20w-50 synthetic. anything lighter or dyno oil the 400ex just cooks in one ride it needs changed

I do have an 8 plate setup from our mutual friend in Millersburg OH. He suggested running this oil. He says that it protects better then motorcycle specific oil.

I trust him and have NO problems so far!!!

That is good to know, I have a 8 plate setup as well. I have heard that the friction modifier deal isn't as much of an issue with a beefed up clutch.

I just picked up 5 quarts of that stuff yesterday long with a new oil filter. Syntheic is so much better, I used to run it but couldnt really afford to pay more for oil anymore with higher gas prices. Well i'm paying $4.35 a quart for synthetic now thats a deal!

I've been using it on my streetbike for years. And the gold cap DOES NOT have the "energy conserving" crap in it.

As far as I know, none of the Mobil 1 Extended Performance viscosities are "Energy Conserving" (ie they don't contain friction modifiers).

The Gold cap is the same as the Red cap, except with more zinc and phosphorours.

Good to know...thanks. I just noticed at my local Walmart that the old "red cap" 15w50 is still made, but with a regular silver cap under the "red label" 15w50 bottle. I was going to up and run that, but if the gold cap 15w50 isn't much more expensive i'll run that instead. Either way it's good oil that I change frequently so you can't go wrong :D
