I just bought a 450r this week, its completely stock, but not for very long. :D Just bought a HMF Ironman Series full exhaust, proarmor nerfs, and K&N filter with outer wear.

Next week I should be getting my parts and im going to have to rejet. Was thinking about just getting a Dynojet kit, but not sure if its really worth $50.

Was thinking about doing it my self but have a few questions about the carb on a 450r. What does the Main air jet do? and why does the dyno jet kit plug it? Is this common? Other than that, I pretty sure I can jet it, I did it on my 400ex and it didn't blow up so maybe ill get lucky again right? haha

What year is the 450R?

Its an 04. If someone has similar add ons, my list is Full Exhaust, K&N filter, HRC lid, i live at about 700 feet elevation.

I would say a 185 main jet, move the needle up one notch and up one size on the pilot jet. I can never remember the stock size. I think the stock pilot is 48.

Ill have my parts guy just look it up for the pilot. Just for reference what is the stock main jet size? thanks.

Stock main jet is 118. Also I forgot to tell you don't get the dynojet kit. Just buy a few jets and start your own. Dynojets are odd sizes.

I went through nearly 27 pages of post and found lots of great information on jetting my quad. Sounds like just what you said, 180-185 and a 50 pilot should get me very close. Thing that got me was, stock is so damn small and just with a few mods it jumps to a 118 to a 180.

One question still hasn't been answered. On the Dynojet kit they talk about pluging a main air jet. Why do they do that? looked for nearly 2 hours now and can't find **** about a main air jet.

Ignore that, its totally not necessary.

And I agree with everything TRX450R_Racer posted, 185MJ, 1 clip up on the needle and a 50 pilot should be a very good starting point for your mods.
Its kind of the standard for and open air box and exhaust on an 04-05 bike.

The reason the jump is so big from stock is because the air box lid is removed, huge increase in air flow.

the jets suggested are all normal (klein jets)

the dynojets are not the same sizes

there are conversion charts but most avoid the dynojet kits

I just got done putting everything on the quad. Looks great and sounds even better! Going riding in a little bit, it has a 185 main, 50 pilot and 2.5 turns on the fuel screw. didn't move the needle yet. Going to see how it is, and adjust from there.

bringing this post back alive. I been out riding only like 3-4 times since I jetted. It seems pretty close. My exhaust turned blue on the very front section. About 5-6 inches id say. Reason I brought this up tonight is I was washing it tonite and its freezing, I got done washing it and was letting it warm up to dry up alittle instead of freezing. After a few minutes I noticed my header was almost glowing. Never noticed that before!!!! I think im going to move the clip up 1 notch.

It only backfires alittle on deceleration other wise it seems fine. I won't be able to do much more this year because riding season for me is about done, but next year when it warms up I will definetly do a plug chop and dial it in alittle better.

One more thing, I have never heard my radiator fan turn on. Does that seem weird to you? My other buddy with a 450r I never heard his turn on either. But other guys with 450's yamaha and what not there's is always on after a ride.

Thanks for any responses. Zach

The fan thing is perfectly normal for the honda 450's. I've seen mine turn on twice and both times it was sitting there idling for 5 or 10 min on a hot day.

wish I had a stock one to try out letting it idle and see if the header turns red. Anyone want to start theirs up tonite and let it idle and see if theirs glows red to? must be a stocker though.

they all glow, on a hot night at the dunes it looks like a neon tube light

The header glowing is normal, don't worry about it.

you should look into a hrc needle, when i changed my needle, i felt a difference in throttle response.
