Im at the point where im ready to sell my 400ex and move up to something else. Back in the winter of 2006, i bought my 04 400ex for $2800, it had a few mods and some new stuff and was in nearly new condition. Back then, i saw others with the same mods or more from 2500-3500. So i thought i did pretty good, keep in mind back then all the other 400s were out and so were the 450s besides the ktm and kfx. Through the next few years i keep up to date with the prices, the good clean ones from 01-04 always stayed around 2500. Then i was without internet for 3 months, i finally got it back up to pace ready to sell my quad. I go to ebay and nearly everything for the 400ex has plumetted, what i saw that would go for 2500 is now at 1500, the brand new condition ones (07+) are from 2800-3800..i got sick when i looked. My ex is in the best condition that ive seen for an 04 thats been rode, i took it to the dealer to get serviced and asked him what he thought theyd go for now, he said probably 2000...im just baffled.

Has the humble 99-04 400ex's really taken this bad of a fall? Im not talking about the ones beat to piss, but the ones that are decent. I hate reality sometimes..

Yep, everyone thinks 450's are better.

The way ive always seen it is that the 450s are just more for the track and the dunes nowadays. Ive always seen the 400s of every make being the best trail bikes, they arent too slow, and they all have an endless supply of mods. And all of the 400s are just so darn reliable, while im seeing constent wrenching with the 450s, heck its just my opnion. Maybe the 450s take everything now. I guess im seeing it from a perspective from a person who isnt able to spend as much money as the other people in this sport, i just wish there was more like me :P

my dealer said they would give me around 2500-3000 but for what I have in it that sucks. I wouldnt get rid of it anyways. I like putting a whoopin on some 450's.

Amen to that. Seeing a 450 that runs strong isn't anything special. Seeing a EX beat 450's, that draws some attention. I get alot of compliments and looks on my quad. Several people have walked up to my machine just to make sure that the EX powerplant is still in it. It's great.:macho

Do you have just the stock oil cooler with a fan. I have a 440 stroker too and want to get the temp down.

Stock oil cooler and stock oil tank. The fan makes a nice difference, especially at the sand dunes. Whenever I drop into the tree runs or hill climbs, I kick the fan on and ride. Before the fan, I would have to stop after awhile a let my quad cool down--not any more.

It's time and money well spent.

All you need for the install is the fan and a toggle switch, the fan doesn't draw enough amperage to require a relay. I used a lighted toggle switch rated for 15 amps (overkill) and it works great.

I want out of the 450 class quads for the general trail riding I do anymore the 450 machines suck.

Anyone wanna trade a nicely modded 400EX for an LTR?

If you're serious about getting top dollar for your 400ex, you're better selling it as a private party through the cycle trader or online.

Dealers typically don't pay as much as you can get if you sold it on the street.

The convenience of dropping it off at the dealer and picking up a new one is expensive.

Yeah, but people tend to trust the dealer more and want to buy one from them. At least thats how it is around here. I tried to sell and all I ever heard was "I can get one for the same price at the dealer".

Im keepin the EX strictly cuz im in it for the heart of the sport and for the machine, I wont see myself buying a 450 unless I build it for QOTM purposes.

Oh no no, thats not what he'd buy it for, he offerd me 1200. That was his guess for selling it locally or ebay etc.

There is a dealer in Nashville, IL that sells brand new 2007 400ex for $3999+ destination & dealer prep fees. My buddy walked out with one last week @ $4600 after tax and title. It has a 4 year warranty on it too... :eek2:

I couldn't give my 400ex away. It was for sale forever and then finally someone offered me some toys and I jumped on it just to rid myself of that quad.

I used to have a 2004 450r it way very nice but I have sold it and now I am buying a 2005 mint condition 400ex (reverse) with maybe 10hrs but I really don't think it has that the oil is so clean and it has never been changed for $2,600 it will do me good for trails and camping. I will get another R maybe if they get reverse but for now my 400ex will do me great

I sold the 450R to buy the LTR....the LTR is better in ways and not in others. But I will say if you have a 250R built right for woods riding like I do they are hard to beat. But for fast trail riding the 400EX is far better than any other quad out there.

i been looking into some 250R's cuz i love them, but i am finding it hard to part with my machine mainly because the people around me dont take any care of their stuff and i dont want to see its condition go down the crapper if i sold it locally

No the 250R's are too old...and you end up with internal engine problems, tranny's, counterbalancer bearings. ANd or cracked engine cases. They are the greatest sport quad ever made but just too old now

06-14-2008, 09:08 AM
I would like to pick up a 400ex in a trade for my 450r but I am picking up a brand new bike in the spring so that would be my main machine and I would just randomly ride the 450 around so it isn't hurting anything in its almost stock form after the big part out.

Too Old! No way man. Sure, they may have some problems at first, but after some tlc, they are as good as new. They are old, but I will always be a big fan of them.

If you guys have ever had a counter balancer bearing go or had the cases split and see how loose a tranny is after 20 years of abuse you would change your mind

I know what you are saying. Parts wear out, but I said after some TLC it would be fine.

lol...do a little TLC to the top end of a 40 stroke and you can end up 2G's or more in the hole...they are all in need of maintenance at some point in time...LONG LIVE THE 250R

exactly, thats why i went to a 250r and sold the 400. over the course of 2 years i broke 2 timing chain tensionsers, trashed 1 head, 8 vaves, 1 piston, 1 timing chain, and 1 valve cover. when 4 strokes get old they are more maintance than 2 strokes in my opinion. then when i finally did sell it, it had a bad top end noise and i got 700 less than i paid, not to mention i dropped over 1500 into when i had it. :( :( :(
