finally got to work on the 300 some. some things have changed since i started the rebuild. i never did build my bigger oven so i had to paint the frame instead of powder coat it but everything else will be powder coated. also the paint i picked out is not what the sample looked like. it was suppose to be a real dark red almost a burgandy. will start stripping the quad tomorrow and powder coating what will go on this frame. also have to put a top end in the motor. will do the a-arms tomorrow and mount them with the front shocks. also have to recoat the swinger since i want it a lot darker red. here is a pic of the frame with a few powder coated parts on it.

this is the quad as it sits now, everything here will be transfered to the other frame.

well ran into a problem last night. took the upper a-arms off and was going to get them ready to powder coat today. wasnt sure if the heim joints would take the 400 degree heat of the oven so tried to remove them from the a-arms. the threads were froze in the a-arm. i tried everything, wd-40, heated the a-arm but nothing worked. i broke one of the heim joints trying to remove them. about half the threads stayed in the a-arm. i drilled it most of the way out and will pick up a tap today and hopefully can rethread it.

a little more progress. got the heim end that broke off out and threaded again. got the top a-arms powdered and 1 bottom. tops are firestone red with clear and silver metal flake in the clear. bottoms are just firestone red with no flakes. also got the shocks bolted on and 1 spindle powdered extreme chrome.

you can see the flake a little in this pic

sorry to say it will be at least a week before i can do anymore. my air compressor broke down friday and they said it would take a week for the part to come in. may go ahead and tear the motor down and order the piston kit for it and clean it up real good and go ahead and put the bottom end in the frame. if any of you have ever pulled a 300 motor you know what a pain they are to get back in. may be easier with the top end off. keep watching, i was going to use this quad as a pit bike since my son has moved up to the hybrid but may sell it when its done to get me a 4X4 quad.

markvette

they hook up too good. with the stock swing arm the quad wheelies out of the gate. hope to get a longer swinger soon but not sure as i am just going to use this as a pit bike and a back up in case the hybrid breaks down. at least my son could ride this one to get his points in the series we are running.

i also made the heat shield on the stock head pipe. it is made out of .160 aluminum plate. still not sure if i will use this exhaust or the sparks. probably clean up the sparks and powder coat the head pipe hi temp silver and the can silver with red flames on it. i done the exhaust on the hybrid with flames on it. i will post a pic of it tomorrow. so far i have powder coated flames on silencers, heel guarda, air scoops and the screen in a ac dirt screen bumper.

got a little more done today but my air compressor part did not come in so i am stopped on my powder coating. got the motor out of the other frame. pulled the top0 end and rings were shot as i thought. cleaned it up real good and put a fresh coat of black paint on it. pulled all my stainless bolts first then put them back in after the paint dried. put on a few parts i powder coated a few months ago but may have to strip them and do in a different color. at that time i had planned on powdering the frame candy red so i done these parts in red vein. they are the engine plugs, starter cover and oil filter cover. just have to see what they look like when it is all done, set the bottom end in the frame just to see what it would look like. still gotta powder the motor mounts and all the bolts.

got the rear tires on the rims and bolted on, got the bumper powdered and on. went ahead and bolted the plastic on to see what it looks like. waiting on my new front rims to arrive so i can powder them and get them on. the rear is 49" wide and the front should be with the new rims. with stock front rims it was 47" wide. think im gonna put new graphics on it too. i like the verde ones with skulls and lighting on them.

that carb looks ridiculously awesome. i really want to do that to mine now haha

how much would you charge to do that for me? do you do your own powdercoating, by the way? just wondering

markvette
07-21-2008, 08:34 AM
yes i do all my own powder coating. i started doing it in november. right now i use a house hold oven so i cant do frames. reall cant tell you on the carb as my post would probably get deleted if i did. something to do with not being a paid supporter so they consider that i am advertising a business. i do a little powder coating for the local racers around here but most is for me personally. with 2 race quads a mini project going on and a 4 X 4 i have plenty of stuff to powder coat. the carb was fun and time consuming. worked on it for 2 days but i think it was worth it. hopefully i will get my rims today so i can powder them and get the tires mounted and on. gonna order the piston today. once i get the rims on i can take the quad off the stand and set the front end up. since i had to take the ball joints out to powder the a-arms i will have to reset the caster and camber. still want to get some stainless brake lines and make my own aluminum brake line clamps. thats another thing i play with making stuff out of aluminum. probably gonna make a set of air scoops too.
