Ok first let me say I am a experienced rider, I have had a CR500, 400ex, honda 450R and now a street legal XR650R which I am selling now for another quad. I can not make my mind up at all. I have a guy I know who is selling his YFZ450 I may be able to get it for 3,200 I don't know whats all done to it but I know he takes care of every thing he has its a 2004 I sold my honda 450r about 8 months ago and really I hate to say but I don't miss having to kick start that thing. I am going to get a electric start no matter what. I ride trails in Kentucky, I am 6ft 230lbs. I was looking at the z's and kfx's because they are fairly cheap around me if I was going to buy one it would have to be 2005 or newer. I am really not that impressed with the 2003 z400 a buddy of mine had one that had a 440 kit on it, cams and edlerbrock carb, pipe and so on. I raced him with my R and it only had a FMF pipe and wasn't even jetted yet. Mine had stock tires on it he had HD holeshots. I raced him then let my friend race him who was more they guys weight and not matter what it spanked him. I need some help decideing. Now I do remember racing a guy with a YFZ in a drag in a field and it was a tie every time.

Sounds to me that you already had your mind made up before you posted. Go get yourself a YFZ;)

It is nice to have reverse if all you ride is trails. I have ridden trails without reverse, but never again. Just my .02

I have similiar mods on one of my Z400s as your buddy and I can walk all over a 450r with just a pipe and filter. I beat several 450s at the EDT race last weekend.

Reverse is the only reason i got the kfx. Other wise i would have picked the yfz. I must say tje reverse does come in handy when you get stuck.

This is why I am thinking a 400 because of reverse and they are much cheaper than a yfz450

Where in KY are you located? I am possibly considering selling my KFX in order to buy a Harley. It is an 04 though.

If I am to get one I will buy 2005 or newer because of the changes that they made that year.

Woa hold up what recalls have been done to these machines since 03' and how can you tell if they have been done. I bought an 03' kfx this Feb and was not aware of this.

If motor means the most to you get the Yfz. If money savings and reverse mean more to you get the Z/Kfx. ;)

03's had weak frames around the shock tower's other wise they are good quads, 05's had a problem with the clucth covers I belive but are the best year 05 on up because of the better shocks, bigger carb, and better cams:D

The early 03 frames had weak tubing for the frame. Later 03 were upgraded to the current grade tubing. 04's got the new subframe and didnt have any problems that I've heard of.

i don't know, but i've been told by more than 1 person that the 05's require special antifreeze is there any truth to this

anti freeze.. a difrent mixture was recomended after finding the coolant mix was causing decay and clogging.after recently finding the problem was the cooloant mixing with the magnesium clutch cover recalls were issued to replace the clutch cover with an alluminum cover. only original owners are usually notified of the recall.

as far as getting a 400 or 450. that is a real toss up . i had the same thoughts cuz theyre both great quads with theyre own distinked advantages. so i baught both an 06 ltz400 and an 07 ltr450. the 400 is great for short tight tracks and will walk most 450 in this arena. but the ltr is better on more larger track's. plus the ltr450 is fun on a flat track if you like drifting LOL...and one last point the 450's dont roll as easy in a corner as the 400 does.lets see 1 year of owning both rolled the ltr450 =1....ltz400=10

have fun and be safe

Yeah I don't ride tracks though if I do its maybe two times a year like if I got to a place in IN call haspin acres thats the only time I will get on a track and thats just to have fun.

ah ya im no pro racer myself . i do a combination of diferent riding.i mostly stay on the track nowadays. the downfall for both or all sport quads is ground clearance. in my area of texas theres about 8 cycle parks near me 2 of witch are major race tracks and the rest are trail riding. but i get stuck alot trail riding bottoming out my suspension. u still have a tuff decision ahead LOL
