well ive always wanted black rims, but my new clutch and basket kinda drained my quad funds. i really wanted to just have the stock rims powercoated, or fork out my life savings for some hipers, but i saw the painted rims thread and it gave me the idea to just give it a shot. if they don't hold up, i'll just wire wheel the paint off and polish them back up. im not getting my hopes up, but after roughing them up and cleaning with rubbing alcohol, i might be surprised. heres the start..

i might use a semi gloss final coat to kinda bring down the shine a little bit, but i'll just have to see them after they have some clear coats, and when they're not in fluorescent lighting.

since everything else has been painted on my quad with great success, i figured why not try! more to come later on

looks good. im interested in knowing how this holds up because i want to do mine sometime. what kinda paint did u use? did you primer them or just scuff and clean them? let me know how they hold up after riding

thanks, i just used gloss black rustoleum, and i used like a 220 grit sand paper to rough them up, and then cleaned them with a degreaser, and then rubbing alcohol to get everything off. i only have two coats on two of the rims so far. it takes a while to tape them and prep them. oh, and the first coat of paint was really thin and i let it dry completely before i put any more on.

i painted mine like two years ago, but i didnt sand before and im regreting it, the stock fronts had all the paint flaking away after 1 3/4 years, but im repainting them soon and doing it correct

did you remove the wheels before you did them or did you paint with them on ?

Pipeless416
07-01-2008, 08:20 PM
when you say remove the wheels do you mean the tires, or the actual rims from the hubs? all i did was take off the rims, then i taped as far down into the bead as i could. im glad to report that i took my quad to the worst place imaginable to ride, and theres not a chip in them anywhere, even after powerwashing the heck out of it when i got home.. too bad everything else wasn't in as great of shape.. :p

The rims and quad look nice

I would think that almost all of the wear should be to the outer rim lips, provided you aren't too rough about cleaning them and what not. Should be simple to touch up as needed or you could simply go for the polished lip look down the road.

09-11-2008, 08:49 AM
so far i only got one good size chip, but that was after a pretty brutal ride. everything else is holding up amazingly. the extreme gloss look kinda went away which im glad.. oh, and that one chip was very easy to fix. :) all in all, im glad i did this. too bad im 4 hours away from my quad when im at school :(

you a freshman? if so, i won't lie.. it doesn't get any easier to go without riding haha. sometimes i tell my brother to go out and take pictures of my quad sitting in the garage and email them to me. it holds me over for about 5 minutes. :p

Yup im a freshmen but next year i might get a storage unit to store my quad (if its cheap enough) because the Silver Lake Sand Dunes is only 1 away from here instead of 3 from where im from
