Round #7 of the Can Am GNCC Series officially carries us beyond the halfway point of an exciting season thus far. While rounds 2-5 have been visited by rain, this round would remain dry with sunny skies greeting all those that made the trip south to Sparta Kentucky.

This round would also see the emergence of Rath Racings Polaris team as they were all dressed up with no where to go once the WPSA series bailed. It was great to see another factory team at the event, and with Raths reputation of supporting its racers, they should be an added bonus for the series for racers and fans alike.

The pit layout was spread out along the main two roads in the middle of the Kentucky countryside, with the Pro pit area centrally located. Yamaha's factory team sits in the morning sunshine as this round would soon be underway. For Bill Ballance, a win in his home state would be icing on the cake and could possibly give him the points lead as he once again finds himself looking at a run for an incredible 9th championship!

Johnny Gallagher has been working hard on Traci Cecco's machine to keep her running upfront. Gallagher's own racing endeavors in the Pro class have him off to a solid season in 2008, currently he sits just outside the top 10 in points and could easily move up if he continues his solid riding and good finishes

Pappy
06-02-2008, 08:11 AM
Brandon Sommers checks over his machine and is having a stellar rookie year in the Pro class. Sommers has visited the podium and is in contention at every event for a win.

From the polished rigs and machines of the Pro class, to those that have been racing long before there were quads to race, the GNCC series embodies the racing spirit in all of us.

Pappy
06-02-2008, 08:34 AM
The morning racers would for once this season be facing a dry track, and for the 4x4 guys that meant a long and brutal race. Managing these heavy machines at race speeds for two hours is an incredible feat that they seem to manage with ease.

Micheal Swift has scored a perfect season in 4x4 Limited, with the exception of round 2 where he finished 8th. Swift is well on his way to another class championship!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 08:39 AM
Mike Penland takes his usual pre race nap:p Penland is a gladiator in the 4x4 world and a treasure for the series as he brings with him knowledge and good sportsmanship from years upon years of racing.

Pappy
06-02-2008, 08:43 AM
Jean Lovely is all smiles as the riders assemble for the start

Pappy
06-02-2008, 08:45 AM
Traci Cecco may be small and quiet, but the girl is an animal on her quad!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 08:47 AM
Jennifer Albright has landed herself a big time sponsor in Geico, and has been working hard to promote them, herself and our sport all season long!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 08:53 AM
I wouldnt recognize these young ladies in their normal clothes:p I almost ran over Angel Atwell in the pits at one round and did not even realize it was her until afterwards. It is amazing how they go from pig tailed racers back to stunning young women after a quick change into civilian attire!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 08:56 AM
Daryl Rath and Frank Batista join the ranks of the GNCC's.

Pappy
06-02-2008, 08:58 AM
It cost me $20 to get her to pose with Jeremie Dudding:chinese:

Pappy
06-02-2008, 09:01 AM
Jamie Bougher looked to be ready for the upcoming race. The fields would be rough and the woods tight, he would be in for 2 hours of serious abuse!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 09:02 AM
Hanging with dad!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 09:04 AM
Hats off to the Racer Productions crew, who work non stop at each event to try and make things run smooth! This poor chap looked like he had seen a few shocks as he grapples with a handfull of wiring:p

Pappy
06-02-2008, 09:07 AM
Out of competition, but in full support of his fellow racers!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 09:08 AM
Security might not be an issue around these parts:D

Pappy
06-02-2008, 09:39 AM
4x4 Limited was first to rocket off the line, and it was Micheal Swift getting the holeshot

Pappy
06-02-2008, 09:41 AM
Swift shows how the offcamber in turn two would easily get you out of shape. This class showed restraint and kept things in control, that wouldnt be the case for the rest!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 09:43 AM
4x4 Lites

Jordan Phillips and the Kymco crew turn the 1st turn blue as they take to the track

Pappy
06-02-2008, 09:45 AM
Cliffton Beasley cautiously exits the 2nd turn and heads off after the leaders. With 6 straight class wins, Beasley not being in the lead at the start was of no concern!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 09:48 AM
Women

Traci Cecco was wheel to wheel with a hard charging Stephanie Parton, however Parton exited the 1st turn and made the run to the second turn with a slight edge.

Pappy
06-02-2008, 09:50 AM
The combination of Parton having to brake hard on the off camber and Cecco sliding in the grass led to a collision, opening the door for Kristen Atwell to have the lead and a full throttle run to turn 3!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 09:52 AM
Atwells run would lead to her visiting the Kentucky woods a bit premature!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 09:53 AM
U2

Rick Cecco rails turn 1 with the holeshot!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 09:54 AM
The first turn was destroyed as poles once again set sail after contact is made!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 09:56 AM

John Gallagher does battle through turn 1 as the class heads out

Pappy
06-02-2008, 09:58 AM
4x4 Open

Scott Kilby puts his Can Am out front as he grabs the holeshot. The remainder of teh class begins to swing wide as their speed carry's them a bit wider then a few would have liked!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 10:00 AM
Contact with a fellow rider sent Greg Condon towards the fence. It was close, but he narrowly missed the large metal structure but made his presence known to the unsuspecting and purely innocent snow fence:devil:

Pappy
06-02-2008, 10:01 AM
Bryan Buckhannon gets a quick look at the carnage happening behind him. Buckhannon has scored 6 straight class wins in 4x4 Open!

Pappy

Sportsman

Keeping an eye on the classes infront of them, this class was pretty mild mannered as they encounter turn 1

Pappy
06-02-2008, 10:07 AM

Harold Bash slides through the first turn

Pappy
06-02-2008, 10:11 AM

Colten Burd goes wheel to wheel as the riders look towards where they need to go!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 10:12 AM
Turn two would be hecti as a rider goes down

Pappy
06-02-2008, 10:14 AM
The starts seem to be brutal in most forms of open wheel racing.

Pappy
06-02-2008, 10:15 AM
The crowd starts to react as the wreck unfolds

Pappy
06-02-2008, 10:16 AM
GNCC racers.....tough sob's for sure;)

Pappy
06-02-2008, 10:17 AM
20+ C

David Burton grabs the holeshot and looked to repeat his round 6 win!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 10:20 AM
24+ C

Andrew Calvin claimed the holeshot as this class makes things interesting at he start.

Pappy
06-02-2008, 10:21 AM
Calvins holeshot would be short lived!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 10:22 AM
30+ C

Joey Duvall grabs the lead with a hungry pack of riders running him down

Pappy
06-02-2008, 10:24 AM
Bryce Strader gets help removing his machine from the 1st turn fencing

Pappy
06-02-2008, 10:26 AM
Womens Novice

Only two entires made the trip to roun 7, and it was Heather Krouskoupf with the early lead

Pappy
06-02-2008, 10:28 AM
Samantha Vanbuskirk gives chase and would take over the lead and grab 3rd class win of the year!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 10:30 AM
One of the First Year racers classes hits the 1st turn (sorry guys, no identifying numbers so I dont know who is who)

Pappy
06-02-2008, 10:32 AM
The second First Year class is off and running

Pappy
06-02-2008, 10:34 AM
Schoolboy 13-15

Hunter Dalrymple leads out one of the most competitive classes in the morning race

Pappy
06-02-2008, 10:36 AM
Jodi Stracham takes a tumble at turn2. She was bruised up pretty good and unable to race, but reports from her family stated she was doing ok!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 10:38 AM
Jesi Stracham gasps as she watches her sister hit the ground. That had to be hard to ride away from that!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 02:09 PM
I did my best to cut off the leaders, however they ripped through the first lap pretty quick:p Atwell wasn't in the lead from what I recall, but things happen pretty quick and the posted results showed her with the lead as lap 1 was scored. It's possible they went through scoring on the 1st lap but were not scored due to the track layout, which is a pretty common occurance.

In any event, Atwell was upfront, and the get together between Parton and Cecco at the start had a gap opened up of 25 seconds once Cecco clocked in 2nd.

Pappy
06-02-2008, 02:13 PM
Bryan Buckhannon had gained the lead in 4x4 Open and had put 47 seconds on Kilby

Pappy
06-02-2008, 02:14 PM
John Gallagher was running good, holding the lead in Super Senior as he worked his way in for the 1st lap

Pappy
06-02-2008, 02:16 PM
Jordan Phillips had dropped to 3rd, as Beasley and Dudding overtook the top two positions

Pappy
06-02-2008, 02:19 PM
The field sections would offer some passing but it would come at a price. The track was quickly becoming ridden with braking bumps that would zap the riders energy as they fought to keep control.

Pappy
06-02-2008, 02:21 PM
The choppy sections right before re-entering the woods was giving the riders a pounding as arms and shoulders would bare the brunt of the abuse!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 02:23 PM
Riders get support from friends that allow them to push even harder.

Pappy
06-02-2008, 02:26 PM
The weather was not really that bad, that is if you like high humidity and temps near the mid 80's. The clouds kept threatening but never did drop any of teh wet stuff on the area! When the clouds would give us a break from the hot sun, the woods would turn dark and while this doesnt work great for photos, it offered the riders a bit better view as the dappled sun can be difficult to ride in.

Pappy
06-02-2008, 02:28 PM
David Hunsucker pilots his 450R in the 30+ class

Pappy
06-02-2008, 02:30 PM

Pappy
06-02-2008, 02:33 PM
Tyler Pittman competes in the Schoolboy class aboard his Raptor 250.

Pappy
06-02-2008, 02:35 PM
Ken Robey ran into some problems and would only score 1 lap:(

Pappy
06-02-2008, 02:37 PM
Swift was out front and leading the overall, however Atwell was closing in on him

Pappy
06-02-2008, 02:39 PM
Before he sound of Swift's Can Am left my ears, Atwell was on the scene and had him in her sights!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 02:40 PM
Traci Cecco was keeping Atwell in check, as Jennifer Albright rounded out the top 3 in the Womens class

Pappy
06-02-2008, 02:42 PM
U2 racer, Micheal benson was charging hard. Benson was in control of the U2 class and looking to once again battle for an overall!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 02:43 PM
Beasley was well on his way to his 7th straight 4x4 Lites victory!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 02:45 PM
Rick Cecco was running in 2nd in the U2 class, but would have some difficulties as he fell to 3rd.

Pappy
06-02-2008, 02:47 PM
Stephanie Verkade did not get a great start, and ran the 1st lap in the 8th position. She worked her way to 5th, only to drop to 7th where she finished the race.

Pappy
06-02-2008, 02:50 PM

Pappy
06-02-2008, 03:04 PM
Frank Batista ripped of a lower arm on his Polaris and would only get in 4 laps. Look for the Rath/Polaris team to get upfront as they get acclimated to the GNCC series!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 03:05 PM
Kyle Riley ripped his way to a class victory in schoolboy!! Great ride Kyle!!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 03:07 PM
Lap 4 had Angel Atwell still holding the overall elad and narrowly edging out Cecco as the pair raced for the win.

Pappy
06-02-2008, 03:09 PM
Traci was shown 28 seconds behind Atwell, and it would shape up to be a battle as the time was closing in to make something happen or settle for 2nd

Pappy
06-02-2008, 03:21 PM
Benson was flying, as he has missed the overall by mere seconds at countless races.

Pappy
06-02-2008, 03:23 PM
Tyler Pittman gets out of the way as a hard charging Buckhannon rips past!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 03:24 PM
Support for all teh riders is usually easy to find!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 03:25 PM
Duddings day ended when he ripped a lower arm off the frame!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 03:26 PM
Mike Penland rode to his best finish this season, finishing 2nd in 4x4 Limited!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 03:28 PM
John Gallagher would face issues and only complete 5 laps, opening the door for Robert Conkle to take the Super Senior win!!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 03:32 PM
Casey Cardins day ended as his Grizzly suffered some damage

Greg Condons machine was wrecked in a similiar form once again. Greg has spent more time then he would like repairing his machine and is frustrated by it. Greg knows what hits can be expected racing XC, and on several occasions he has remarked how easily his quad has been damaged by wrecks that he did not feel would lead to such damage.

Hopefully greg can get her straightened out and back on the track for the next round

Pappy
06-02-2008, 03:34 PM
The woods were just to tight for me to want to spend much time taking pictures in as I like not being run over and dont like being in the way or a distraction to the riders, so the fields would have to do this round:ermm:

Pappy
06-02-2008, 03:36 PM
Atwell would check in with the lead for the last time on the 4th lap

Pappy
06-02-2008, 03:37 PM
Cecco would take the lead and run it wide open to the checkers!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 03:38 PM
Benson came screaming into scoring as riders get out of his way!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 03:40 PM
Chuck D grabs a shot as he gathers info for his monthly magazine

Pappy
06-02-2008, 03:41 PM
Dont worry Chuck, if you didnt get that shot, I did:devil: :blah:

Pappy
06-02-2008, 03:43 PM

My new motto:

"Show some skin, and pappy will let you into his race coverage" :blah:

Im not a fan of hot weather, but it has it's advantages:p

Pappy
06-02-2008, 03:47 PM
The last few turns, all Traci had to do was get to the checkered flag. Finishing first did not garuntee the overall, as she knew a few seconds lost in traffic could cost her!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 03:52 PM
In the end, Atwell would finish 2nd to Cecco and 3rd overall, as she put in another fantastic race!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 03:56 PM
For Micheal Benson, it was a matter of 9 seconds keeping him from the overall! Another close one!

Benson on the podium was pretty emotional as he told the story of his good friend who had to under-go heart surgery and he dedicated his winnings and win to his buddy. Join me in praying for his friend and for Mike, they dont make men like him everyday and we need to do all we can to keep them in our prayers!

Pappy
06-02-2008, 03:59 PM
Traci Cecco holds the ATVriders.com overall award check as she basks in the glory of yet another win! Cecco holds the points lead over one determined Angel Atwell, and the rest of teh season should prove to be exciting and intense as it appears another close points race is upon us as 3 points is all that seperates them!!

That wraps up the morning race coverage folks, hope you all enjoyed it!

Thank`s Pappy for the nice coverage.
I race the German GCC (German Cross Country). Your pics always are encouraging to even train harder for the next race. Hopefully the GCC is becoming as big as the GNCC.

Your quite welcome. I hear my work is pretty big all over the world these days! I know in Isreal and a few other mideastern countries my work is all over the place, and I knew Europe was growing everyday!

We appreciate your support, and if I get over my fear of flying, maybe I could come shoot in Germany!

Did you happen to get any pictures of a wipe out coming down that last little hill here at Sparta before the finish line. My husband was in front of the leaders...getting ready to be lapped but he would have made it one more lap if he hadnt crashed right at the finish line. We have looked at eveybodys photos trying to catch it but you seem to have been standing in the right place to catch the photo. My husband would love to see them if you have them...he was bruised but not permanently damaged...ha ha.
