I just bought a 2002 400ex with a busted transmission (from chain fly up) for $750. I'm new to sport quads and and im just wondering what year crank cases will fit. i am a capable mechanic i have rebuilt jeep transmissions and set up ring & pinions but i have no idea whats inside this thing. how bad of a job is it to swap out the case? i have read about updating to the newer trans with reverse but i want to do this cheaply.

look for a used bottom end, i sold one on here 0ff an 05 that toasted the top end for just over 300 bucks.. And that was the one with reverse

on the new 400ex transmissions with reverse how exactly do you engauge the reverse? on my kawasaki utility i put it in neutral and turn a knob and push down on the shift lever. how exactly do they work do you need to rig up something like that on the older 400's?

and the case savers they sell to keep chains from breaking the case. i have seen several on dennis kirk and ebay is any of them better than the other or at they all prety much equal? and how well do they work anyways?

Same as your utility except down twice. And the case saver mounts just in front of the sprocket so if the chain breaks it runs around and down the sprocket instead of around and into the case.

What looks like happened on mine was their was a kink in the chain and when it came around it slammed into the shift lever that sticks out and it busted it out. would a case saver keep that from happening again?
