In 2006 they did most of the engine changes and in 2007 they added the oil mod. The oil mod lubricates the wrist pin which didnt happen on the 06's. But if I were you just shoot for getting an 06,07, or 08. If you can afford it go for the 07 because a wrist pin failure can be fairly spendy.

yea go for the 06 or higher. I've put about 400 hours on mine this year and havnt had a problem yet. But if you want the most reliability then go for the 07. Theres nothin wrong with an 04 but its just got its problems and probably wont last as long as a newer one. If you do some research then you could probably find a site that shows all the changes yamaha did from 05 to 06. Go with whatever you can afford because you dont need to break the bank to get a new quad as long as the older ones in a good condition.

the only changes made to the engine itself from 04-05 to 06 was the 10 extra cc, and from 06 to 07 the oil mod...so for the money you save buying an 04 engine you could send the side case away and get the oil mod done RIGHT for $200...just somethin to think about. your gf wont miss that 10cc at all. and besides, that as well can be fixed.

there were other changes made to the yfz but since your just buying an engine...thats about all you have to worry about. personally i'd take the 04-05 engine (depending on the prices you find) and send the side case away for the mod to try and save a few bucks.
