Hi my dad just got a new 2007 Polaris Outlaw 500 IRS for 3900$. I was wondering what are some things we should look for in this quad. For example how does it do crossing water or are there some maintanence ( how ever you spell it) things we should pay special attention too. Thanks Nick

have a dealer check to make sure the recalls were done.

then buy a JD jet kit and correct the jetting.

Ride, refuel, repeat.

of course after a little while you will want to go faster.......

JD Jetting does not make a kit for the 500. I use the Dynojet kit but some prefer mikuni jets.

What is wrong with the stock jetting?

nothing if the 500 is completly stock, you guys are thinking of the 525 and 450's, the ktm engines have wrong jetting, not the old 500's.

It is something I made to help everyone out. I have had 2 06 500's and a 07 525 now.

I added a Dynojet jet kit, a K&N filter and an EHS Racing air box cover (for going through water). The jetting and the filter added a ton of power, and I haven't used the lid cover yet. I trail rid in MN and we have a lot of water holes and mine would stall until I dried the air cleaner when going through water. I am also putting a 13 gear front sprocket one when it comes in.

The jet kit, filter and sprocket costs about $140. The air box cover is $110. I definitely recommend the first three. It even helped started when cold.

will that air lid with the little slit in the rear of it be a problem when crossing ft deep water?

It's totally sealed. Check it out at http://www.ehsracing.com/products/outlaw_airbox_EHS.htm

It seams to be a decent design. I've read it can tear easily, but the replacement fabric is only $15.

I meant the stock air lid but that one looks pretty cool.

Keep in mind they are not submarines and it is not a utility quad. Its a sport quad with IRS. You get in too deep of water and it will get in your airbox/motor.

ya i know it will get into the air box and motor thats why im asking how the stock air lid is. I took the seat off and noticed the slit in it and was a little worried about that.

The stock air lid is NOT good for water. We trail ride in MN quite a bit when it's wet and that is the reason I got the new lid. If you go slow through water you'll be fine, but I usually am busting through sliding sideways and I was constantly pulling over letting the water drip-dry off my air cleaner. It might be a poor design, but my buddies Wolverine 450 does it too.

ya we usually go slow through the water cause we don't wana get a wave coming at us after we hit it.

I'm usually out front and I hit the water as hard as I can. We also went through a mud hole with a hard bottom that came up to the top of the motor that was about 200 feet long and as soon as I came out the other side my wheeler die for about 10 minutes. That's the stuff we like to go through that's why I got the lid cover. All my buddies have crappy 4x4 sportsmans. They thought mine was a joke til they tried it now they all want to trade whenever they can
