If you can get a 250X bottom end you can use the clutch cover and all the gears for the kicker and still have electric start. I just did mine and it only took an hour to get everything hooked up. You also have to remove the oil line that goes into the transmission shaft , which gives more oil to the top end. I got a 250X motor for around 250 bucks.

well havent even asked how you like it.Is it hard to kick, i can kick 450's so shouldnt be a problem, does it hold up? etc?

Its not bad to kick mine has a 250X top end thats been bored .050 over so it has some compression but mine starts in one kick usually. I need to find a way to make the kicker stay back so it doesnt hit my leg but otherwise its nice when my starter wont turn it over.. good luck

i'm glad someone has spoken up that's actually done this. i've seen a few quads on ebay and heard of other people doing it but never actually talk to those who did. i'm going to have to search out a 250x bottom end now!

Yea mine works really good mine is a lil hard to kick because the higher compression but its nice to have when the starter loses power. I need to make something that holds the kicker in place it keeps hitting my leg and giving me bruises. otherwise no problems. only took around a hour to do this. It involves taking the clutch off to put the gear in the back. U also need to take off the gear case cover so u can install a longer shaft. i bypassed this and cut the longer one to fit. the oil tube that wraps around the clutch also needs to be taken out. It seems like i get better oil to my top end now. I took the compression release off too. Idk wat is was used for. Hope this all helps.
