I just got my 400ex put back together after a rebuild and it started but it is really noisy. It sounds like something is pounding on inside. Also it doesn't stay running when i let off the gas,(that could be my carb). It does start good... I adjusted the valves to 6 and 8. Any ideas?????? Its been almost 6 months since i got to ride it so any ideas would be great so i can get back on it!
THANKS

I have a HMF full exhaust
Stage 2 hotcam
And a 11:1 Piston slightly over stock bore
Jetted

Sounds like its possibly out of timing. What all did you do to the engine?

I replaced the valves, piston and piston rings and cam shaft and put on a full exhaust and jetted it. Its not a pinging noise more of a loud clicking noise.

There is no decompresser in it.

What kind of piston and cam? Describe how you set the timing so maybe we can rule that out.

well its a 11:1 nemura piston and a stage 2 hotcam.

I set timing by using the clymer manual I had the piston at tdc and i put the cam lobes down. Could I be off any?

As long as all of your timing marks were on when you timed it it should be ok. I would recheck the valve settings. Make sure you do it cold. Even being off a few thousandths it will make a lot mroe noise than it should.

yah i checked the valves, still no luck. It makes a god awful noise.
Its not a metal to metal cling, but more of taking a rubber mallet and hitting the engine from the inside. Its loud like a exausht pipe, but comeing out of the engine (there is no exahust leak what so ever). Any other ideas? Any would help

I would say make sure your header bolts are tight but you said there arnt any exhaust leaks so I dont know. Its hard to figure out without being able to hear it.

I have heard this also, but I have had the old one, and currently have the new one and both settings are the same on mine.

no, its for .005 and .006 . I cant believe I didnt notice thats what he said he set them at. .006 and .008 would be way too much. Try setting them at .005 intake and .006 exhaust.
