For the money, I think the '04-'05 450R carbs are the best. They are available BRAND NEW from service honda for about $180!

Install is a 4 on a scale from 1-10.

Here is a link to my 450R install how-to (http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=314423)

i would not recommend the 450R carb for an unmodified engine. that is a big carb for the 400ex.

i wouldnt have any ideas on base jetting for the 450R carb on the 400 cuz the carb is bigger than the ex carb

so would i be better off buying a edelbrock for the 400

i may not be correct, but i dont think that a carb will help as much as putting a pipe on it, or putting a cam in it as far as power goes...and carbs are expensive. if you are in the hunt for power, then there are alot of other, more cost effective and better options to choose from. why are you wanting another carb anyway?

the guy who owned it before me had striped all the heads on the screws in and out i cant get the screw out to check the needle and striped the threads on the float bowl

see if a local shop can fix it cheaper...even a car mechanic may be able to. or else, but another stock carb. i think a 450R carb is too much for a stock bike

it would only be about $100-$150 more for the edelbrock than stock from my local dealer they r kinda of joke

I have talked to many people who used my adapter and a 450R carb on a stock 400EX and found the 450R carb to be a nice upgrade. And at $180 NEW, how can you go wrong!!!!

zrpilot do you have anymore of the adapers? I sent you a PM too.

Is there anything else that's needed to do this upgrade on my 400ex? Mine is a 426, cam, r4 full pipe. What about the electrical connections on the 450r carb?

Thanks, Michael

Please refer to my 450R install thread here (http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=314423)

It will answer most of your questions!

I would recommend getting a 450R throttle cable and fuel line. Makes the install much easier.

I can only paas along my experience with the FCR vs the 450R carb.

The FCR:

Pros
1) Possibly makes more PEAK HP
2) Slightly easier install (using the SUDCO version from Powroll, Sparks, C&D, ETC...)

Cons:
1) VERY EXPENSIVE (like $500)!!!
2) Harder IMO, to tune
3) different jets

450R Carb
Pros:
1) Uses the same mains as the 400EX
2) Easier to tune, IMO
3) ALOT of people here have advice and experience using!!!
4)CHEAP, $160 brand new!!!

Cons:
1) Slightly more difficult install
2) May make less peak HP

My experience with the FCR is that I just could not get rid of a low RPM bog that I had when I ran the FCR. I tried jetting on a dyno, (3) different needles, AP adjustments. Nothing worked!

I hated when I was on the trail and needed to blip the throttle to get up or over something and the motor bogged... yuck. I had to correct it!

When I put on the 450R carb, the bog went away and it runs MUCH better!

Just my $.02

Oh okay I see. Yeah the price is definetley a BIG pro for the 450R carb.
I think I may just buy one of your adapters in the near future. :)
