ive heard that a good port and polish is where the real power is at. true? ive been wanting to do this.

Sort of.
The real power is in the entire package, making sure that all components are designed to work together.
If you got a top-notch porting job, but all other components of your engine were stock, you'd see very little gain. Maybe 4 horsepower.
However, if you're engine was fully built with a piston, camshaft, carburetor, the works, and THEN ported your engine, you'd see a 10-12hp difference from before to after.
Porting can make a big difference, yes. But it's really most effective when combined with the total package.
