just bought a set of AC nerf bars, and have heard that they are trouble to install. was wondering if anyone could give me a few pointers or tips to make it go a little smoother.

well if they are like mine,
<a href="http://s111.photobucket.com/albums/n148/tri5ron/03%20400ex/?action=view¤t=IMG_8194.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n148/tri5ron/03%20400ex/IMG_8194.jpg" border="0" alt="'03 trx400ex"></a>
then the best thing to do is to throw the instrustions in the trash.
i was only able to get mine on by sliding the two front sections together first, installing the forward bolts, then sliding the peg mounts into the nerf, installing the front bolts, then using a botle jack to get the peg mount to rotate into proprer posoition and install the "peg bolts."

I had the exact same problem when I put on my black AC nerfs. I installed the foot peg mounts upside down, rode it at Glamis, CA like that for a weekend, then had someone there tell me the foot peg mounts were upside down! Oh, how stupid I felt! I should have known by how close they were to the rear tires that they were on wrong. Leave it to AC's lack of detailed instructions to steer me in the wrong direction. Oh, well. Once I fixed them, they look sweet.

The best pointers I can give you is to have a lot of paintence, a pry bar, and a buddy to thread the bolts while you pull every muscle in you back trying to line it up. Another tip is make sure there are no kids around so they don't hear you cursing up a storm when you realize we were all right.

hopefully they wont be as bad as what you all are making it sound. i am going to have a limited tool selection when i do this, which sucks. i am going riding saturday, and putting them on right before i go riding. sounds like i will need a pry bar, and a few people helping.

if you notice in the pic I posted, the peg mounts are upside down. I had mounted them, and took the pic before I had even sat on it.
10 seconds after taking that pic I sat on it and realized the pegs were about 4" too low. I couldn't even reach the shifter to up shift, AND the heel guards were way too close to the rear tires.
The best way to get them to fit is to slide the left and right sides together first. then loosely install the engine mount bolts and spacers.
(do this with the rear ends of the bars hanging to the ground). Next install the peg mounts into the nerfs, and raise the rear of the nerfs up so that you can get the FORWARD bolts to line up with the frame holes.
(Note- The 2 frame bolts go BELOW the nerfs), (not above, like you see in my pic).
next use a bottle jack, or prybar, or ratchet strap, or a champion weight lifter, to raise the rear of the nerfs ,while you are laying on the ground with rear bolt in hand, and when you get it lifted up to the right height, the rear bolt hole should line up enough to get the bolt in.
next, tighten the 4 rear bolts, THEN tighten the forward engine mount bolts.
after all of that, check everything before you drill through the peg mounts.
if you do it this way, we will have saved you about 2 to 3 hours of frustration, and therefore it should only take you about 17 days, and 6 gorillas to get them on.
and BTW,.... Also heed what hornetgod said above.
Good Luck!
