I did this with a C clamp removing it from the head. Is this salvagable or did I ruin it? I'm thinking I ruined it.

Even without that damage it looks like it needs to be replaced. The seat face appears to have distinct cupping.

Really? I don't see any cupping.

To the original question, yes, that valve is ruined. It's possible that a skilled machinist could make it usable again, but it would be risky, it would be weak in that area, and it's just not worth the risk and hassle.

New valve.

Yeah? Those sure look like steps that shouldn't be there.

Maybe I'm seeing something that's not there but I'd swear I see them in every one of those pictures that show the face. I bet if you ran your finger along there you'd feel a ridge on the top and bottom edge of the face.

I can also see what GP is seeing, it does seem like it dishes some.

Maybe it's a toe-may-toe/toe-mah-toe issue.

The valve face looks worn, yes, I'll agree to that one.

But as far as I know, that isn't referred to as "cupping". That's just a worn-out valve. Cupping is when the sides of the valve begin to turn upwards, also called tuliping. It's generally a combination of excess heat, and excessively high seating pressure or a mis-match of angles between the valve seat and the valve face.

Yes, I think our confusion is in the semantics.

I believe you're right that a "cupped valve" is distinguished by the margins of the valve being bent in such a way that the edges form a cup shape out of the valve head. When I said "...seat face appears to have distinct cupping" I was trying to describe the wear on the sealing surface of the valve only. I should be more careful about using the word "cupping" to describe that kind of valve wear.
