i have a 06 400ex with alot of accessories but all are mostly cosmetic other than my new clutch. What is needed to build a 416cc or even bigger. I am only about 6-8 months into this sport but i am a speed freak and I now feel that i have this bike down but hate getting passed by everyone of my buddies that ride yzf450's and can am renegade 800's. If I do do a build and do a 416cc or even bigger what do I need for a complete build to have a reliable quad? I am willing to spend a little money and want to make sure it is reliable but i am always a fan of ebay where i can save a few bucks. Please help me out as this website and all the members have been very helpful on informing me about the sport and my quad.

BTW my first upgrade is the MOTOWORKS SR4 CARBON full exhaust. I hope to soon have a nice enough quad soon to show off to all of you. I mostly bought it for trail riding but it can ALWAYS be better and I dont mind putting a couple bucks into it to make it better. Thanks for all the input on here.

you can get a new 416 or 426 piston on ebay. Then take your cylinder to a machine shop and have it bored and matched to the 416 or 426. Shouldnt be more than a couple hundred bucks. Depending on the compression you choose you may have to get heavy duty head studs which is like $115 installed from gt thunder plus shipping.

If you want to really wake it up you will need to do several things because everything works together. You will see a gain if you do one or two things, but you wont be getting the full potential out of those things. Also what kind of compression do you want? Do you want to run pump gas or race gas?

you wont be passing the 450's and 800's on a 416 but youll keep up.

build it right.

416, 11:1cp, stage 2 hotcam, HD studs, CRF450 cam chain, exhaust, 450r carb, and proper jets and you should be hauling.

You arnt supposed to run the sparks key with a high compression piston due to heat issues.

those motowrk sr4 carbon exhaust are real sweet my buddy has one.
Did you rejet and pull off your airbox lid? also did you get a new air filter?
When you get passed are you just drag racing?
What about suspension are you still running stock shocks?
you can always throw a cam in there also that will help to.

I just rebuilt my engine this winter with a 406 11:1 piston, hotcam stage 2, and crf cam chain. I'm still shocked at how much of a difference this made. Before the build it had a slip on and lid removed. It's a whole different animal now:D

I have a stage 1 cam, if i decide to go to a 416 can I without going to stage 2.

You can still use the stage 1 cam with a 416; however, from my research the stage 2 will give you much better gains in the top end (it will pull longer), without sacrificing too much bottom end.

If you want to keep up with 450's, even pass them up, depending on your skills, go with a 440 kit and install it yourself. Or, if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, there are plenty of shops that will do the install for you. If you want to smoke most 450's, go with a 465 kit, although it is pricey at shops like Trinity Racing. eBay sells the 440 kit pretty cheap, for like under $300.00, although buy at your own risk on there.
