i'm picking up my first truck this weekend. it's a 1996 chevy silverado 1500. 2WD, extanded cab, ?.? liter 305 V8. gets around 20 MPG's i think. ONLY problem with it is there is a tiny bit of the clear coat chipping off on the roof, which is no big deal at all, especially because my neighbor has a paint booth. i want to get some pipes for it. or at least mufflers. i'm trying to keep it cheap. i am looking for a nice aggresive sound. i was thinking glass packs, but if mufflers are cheaper then i will go with those. what should i get?

Get rid of the cat and use 3+ inch exhaust piping.

i think you need the cat to pass Missouri inspection.

This thread is soon to be followed by "getting my first loan to pay for gas friday!!!!"

Don't waste your time trying to tear me apart. I drive a '97 F-150 with the 4.6L V8 and get between 12-15mpg. All I do is drive highway and that is my conservative mileage (never going above 2,000 rpm).

Honestly there is no way that you will get 20 mpg. I have a friend that has a similar truck and he gets 10 mpg. It isn't driving styles either. Very conservative fellow.

Good luck though.

Run a test pipe and when its time for inspection un bolt the test pipe and bolt the cat back in place. Running no cat gives it a more deeper sound.

the MPG estimation was just what i was told. at this point it's already set in stone that i'm getting this truck. we are buying it from a friend of ours for a VERY good price. i'm not going to drive alot anyway. just to school(10 mins away), work(2 mins down the road), and maybe to a friends house on the weekend.
EDIT: just asked my dad and it's a 5.0 liter feul injected 305 V-8. i did some research and this truck should get 14-15 city and 18-19 highway.

only 22 in an elantra??? my ranger gets 25 more if i'm not feeling like racing home from work to get in the hot tub lol i mean granted i have the 2.5 4cylinder which gets better mileage then the 2.3s because of the 8 spark plug setup but wow only 22

I drive a 5cyl. Canyon and it gets worse gas mileage then a hemi V8 in a full size ram.

My buddy's dad keeps his fuel mileage on a spreadsheet for his 4x4 ext cab canyon and he gets 24 mpg or 25 mpg on premium.

He does has a cold air intake and computers been programmed.

You might want to check into doing that for yours.

I have 4.10 gears, and a posi rear.

It's probably not going to get much better, but I average 16mpg and I try to be conservative 90% of the time.

Haha yeah :o, that is just going around town but once I get on the highway if I turn the cruise on I can get it up to 35 or so, just don't drive on the highway much!! I have an aftermarket muffler on it & HAD a chip & cold air intake but we took those 2 off as it kept setting off the check engine light :( it was ALOT peppier w/ that stuff haha, my car is also an automatic so that is another down fall on the mileage :(

good luck on the new truck. i love chevys. i drive a ford now, which i also love. but i would prefer a chevy and miss my old chevy i sold. get use to a gas guzzler. man they had an article in our local newspaper about how some of the older gas pumps around here cant handle the $4 gas prices. didnt read it though. dont kno if its cause the gauges can only count up so high or what? but man thats redicilous.:scary:

flowmaster sounds terrible... and for a 305 you dont need 3inch exhaust...2 1/2 duals with a magnaflow "wideopen" muffler will sound good and deep... i have that on my silverado that has a 5.3 and it sounds great...i have a vid if your interested in hearing the exhaust

305 is a 5.0

Ive been told with my 302 5.0 that 2.25" to 2.5" exhaust is the best. 3" would be too big for a 305.

I love Flowmaster super 44s but I cant afford them at $90 each. Look into Dynomax bullets they are $30 each and sound great.

the guy didn't clean before he sold it.

Which 450?
05-15-2008, 08:41 PM
ive had every type of chevy truck from '82 to '04, s-10s and full sizes, the only thing to get over 20mpg is my '87 s-10 with a 2.5. the best v8 was my silverado, got just under 19 driving flat ground at 65mph for 2 hrs. but its usually 14. You wont see over 15mpg with that truck. and anything you to do the exhaust will make it worse.

05-15-2008, 08:41 PM
nah lol. it's a friend of ours. we just told him we'll take it as is. plus i wanted to clean it up myself. he did put a full tank of gas in it before we picked it up. the cool part is that it's a 2 owner truck and we know both of them. this thing was babied all it's life lol.

bulkdriverlp
05-15-2008, 08:59 PM
it wont be babied anymore!! let us know about the milage, i cant take the suspence. dont b.s. either.lol

that should clean up nice :) if you have a quad your gonna hate the tonoue(sp):o cover haha, we had one on ours & my husband refused to take it off so it was pretty much worthless for hauling stuff!! I fit more in my 88' suburban :D:D quads included :Q

trx400EXtreme
05-16-2008, 07:45 AM
the cover will be taken off and sold. i will NEVER use it. the truck has about 131000 miles on it. not bad considering it's 12 years old.

got some more pics of it. i just rinsed it off for the most part. i have more stuff i gotta do today so i couldn't clean it very good. but anyway......

I have the exact same truck (year , color and everything) except with the 6.5 TD, 2 wheel drive , it barley gets 20 on the highway.

That is not true! I have the same truck 400ex is talking about and when I giver er hell I still get 15mpg not even lieing. When I drive conservative I get 18-21mpg. Chevy's get better gas mileage than Ford's.
