I havent had my 400ex very long, I changed the oil right after i got it to 10w40, but my friend is telling me that they require oil that is certified for wet clutches (at least for his predator but im inclined to think the honda does too) anybody want to let me know if this is true? Oil is alot cheaper than clutches so I'd rather replace that. Thanks.

sven_502, wet clutch "safe" oil is needed but that doesn't necessarily mean that what you have in there is bad. If you're unsure or can't find out then dump it and get something you can be sure about.

Oil that is made for atvs/motorcycles is wet clutch safe. Regular motor oil is ok, but it doesnt have the same antifoaming additives in it that motorcylce oil does. That means the oil will foam more than the motorcyle oil and wont provide as good of lubrication. It foams more in a atv/motorcylce because of the transmission.

Just make sure the oil you use doesn't have friction modifiers in it. It's the friction modifiers that mess up your clutch.

Ya i use the valvoline ATV oil and it works like a charm and is only like $3 a quart.
