My 8.5' X 24' CarMate trailer is wearing out my BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A tires. I bought these tires before I had the trailer and definitely wouldn't have bought an aggressive treaded tire if I had known.

I admit I might be putting to much of the weight at the front of the trailer...but still, these tires aren't going to last much longer.

Anyone have experience with this issue and found a good tire? I plan to go back to 245/16 instead of the 265/16. I rarely drive in the snow and if I do, it will be less than an inch. I want a really long lasting tire that can handle the weight load a bit better.

I have a 2003 Silverado 2500HD diesel, crew cab, short bed, 4X4.

Thanks,

Jon

Are they load range D I'm assuming? step up to load range E, balance your load better. How much weight are you pulling? What does the snow have to do with it? A skinnier tire will work better in the snow anyhow...

Mine do have load rating of "D". Is there anything higher than an E rating for my truck?

My trailer weighs 3,700 lbs empty but I generally haul with 2 sport quads and tools. I am guessing around 4,700 lbs.

I just mentioned the snow because I don't need a real aggressive tread as I doubt I will see much snow with this truck.

I plan to go back to the 245 even though it isn't as tall and looks wimpy. My mileage dropped when I went to the 265 BFG AT tires. I am hoping to gain back 1 to 2 mpg.

if you decide to go with tires similar to what you have now get pro comp all terrains... bfg all terrain wore out really fast on my dads duramax but now he has pro comp all terrains and there lasting alot longer... he pulls a 16ft inclosed trailer full of construction tools almost everyday

I am going with another set of BF Goodrich tires; however, they are considered a commercial All Terrain tire with an "E" rating. The stats look the same as the Pro Comps including a 50,000 mile warranty.

http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/specs/commercial-t-a-all-season/45.html

It is $695 OTD including tax, mounting, balancing for all 4 tires in LT245/75R16/E. They are rated for 3,042 lbs. I almost went for the LT265/75R16/E because they are rated for 3,415. I really want to try to maximize my mileage though. I am at the point I use this truck to pull my trailer to the track and 28 miles round trip to work 2 days a week.

I do appreciate the info and will try these if the new ones don't work out better.

Tire King shouldn't have sold me what I have now. They are only a D rated tire and I haven't determined if maximum air pressure is 35 or 50 lbs yet. My truck is home and I don't know exactly which tire I have. That is one thing about these discount places...they are masters at selling you one thing when you think you are getting another. Ah, you wanted a can of American Coke...you just said Coke so we thought it was okay to give you the Chinese knockoff we sell. :huh

I have on my HD 285/75/16 BFG's load range E and i put my fronts at 50psi and the rear at 40 when not towing and 50psi when towing but i have a 4dr 4wd long bed and it rides rough on the freeway with 50psi and no load. I have a 8.1l but in the diesel i would put 50psi in the front for the weight of the motor to help the tires out better.

Jon,I know that you have already picked out a set of tires but here are the ones I am running on my truck http://www.nittotire.com/#index%2Etire%2Eterragrappler%2Esizes

I am running a 285/75/16 D and have been very pleased with these tires so far.I also have the same size trailer as you and pulling probably the same weight, maybe a little more.

By the way....I remember you posting about the trailer you bought but don't remember a picture.I'd like to see it.

geez, their D load tires can handle more load than other manufacturers E load tires.

My favorite thing about the trailer is it doesn't leak...followed by the 7' ceiling height.

Wow, even with an unbalanced load, thats not that much weight at all, those tires should hold up a lot better. What pressures are you running? 35 is waaay too low for that truck.

Jon, you should run whatever tire pressure Chevy calls for when towing. There should be a sticker on the drivers door jamb stateing the recommended pressure. I realize mine is a Ford but other than the make, our trucks are about the same. Mine calls for 50 lbs. in front and 70 lbs. in the rear. I'm pretty sure dads 2500HD calls for 80 lbs. in the rear.

Barry,

Sticker on door says 55 lbs for the front and 80 for the rear. For the rear, this exceeds the max tire pressure for the BFG All Terrain T/As that are installed. It is listed at 65 lbs.

I went through the rears really quick the last time...20,000 miles. So, I bought two new ones and put them on the front and moved the fronts to the rear. Now, they are more than 50% gone. The original tires lasted 45,000.

The originals were E rated where these are D rate. I hope that is the big difference. These also have less tread hitting the road. My original tires looked more like a summer tire.

I am not running 35 lbs. I just meant there are BFG made for 35 lb max and 50 lb max. I've been running mine at 60 front and rear.

Don't know what to tell you, Jon. Dad puts a crap load of miles on his truck and he swears by Michelin(sp?) tires. Best wearing tires he's found in 50+ years of traveling. Just make sure the tire load rating matches the truck.
He also has a +100 HP chip in his. That helps remove rear tire life in a hurry, if you don't have a light foot!

Got the BG Goodrich Commercial All Terrain tires installed as planned in the stock 245/75/16 size. Mileage went from 14.8 driving to and from work to 16.9. This is just the mileage stated on the electronic display in the truck. I will have to do some real world tests. This is in line with what I expected because I knew it dropped when I went to the 265/75/16 tires. The ride is what I am liking most. It is back to being a totally smooth ride.

I will be pulling the trailer to Birch Creek this weekend so I will get a really good feel for the mileage when pulling the trailer. Last time I went, I averaged 11.3 mpg.
