The opening round of the 2008 IATVHSS took place at Fun Valley in Montezuma,IA. The week leading up to the event was meet with a ton of rain and left much of the parking areas sitting under water. The Fun Valley staff was busy getting everyone into spots that were near the pavement and for the most part dry.

The 50 classes which run for 30 minutes were the first to get a chance to challenge the course.

Even these little guys had to pick good lines and showed huge hearts. Getting some traction on the grass and leaves seemed to help quite a bit.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 12:11 PM
Colton Grief getting a little push from Dad, Scott Grief. Many of the parents line the course and help all the kids keep going with a push or a cheer.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 12:34 PM
I'm not sure who was more excited about grabbing the holeshot in the 90 production class, Logan Hazzard or his Dad, Roy.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 12:36 PM
Chance Kellison didn't get the holeshot but quickly took over the lead in the 90 stock class.

Johnny & Monica

C classes were next

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 04:01 PM
The course started on the motocross track and then zigzagged in and out of the woods. The mx portion was in good shape, the woods however would be quite a surprise for the racers since most spots were still wet from the 7 inches of rain that had at the track in the days before the race.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 04:03 PM
The new first year racers class and the juniors got a little confused and all left the line at the same time.

05-08-2008, 04:10 PM
This poor guy came walking back in on the first lap:(

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 04:15 PM
Still on the first lap and many racers are already unrecognizable and almost look like they and their machine were one rolling ball of mud.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 04:18 PM
The pond here was overflowing and running out over the track.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 04:20 PM
Gotta keep that momentum going

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 04:23 PM
Racers all over the track were giving the thumbs up and I think that meant they were just happy to still be moving.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 05:47 PM
In this off camber section racers were sliding clear down into the thickets.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 05:50 PM
Robbie Enquist the C+26 class winner.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 05:53 PM
In the war of man vs. mud if can go either way with one turn.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 05:55 PM
Just a short section and back to the mx with another lap in the books.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 05:57 PM
Jason McCoy had a great day in the utility class with his second place.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 06:02 PM
The track was getting slicker and more and more ruts were erupting with all the racers getting stuck or high centered. The utilitys made easy work of the track though.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 06:08 PM
Jake Stratton +50 class racer

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 06:58 PM
I think I see some eyes in there.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 07:01 PM
Here the mud was soupy and slick but other areas the mud was more like a suction cup.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 07:03 PM
The mud was flying

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 07:07 PM
Most racers really appreciate the spectators and all their help.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 07:09 PM
The weight of the mud broke off many fenders.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 07:12 PM
You can see the size of some of the ruts here with this quad up to the axle.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 07:14 PM
Almost over, not letting up.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 07:16 PM

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 07:21 PM
As the afternoon race was about to get started my Daughter gave her Dad some words of wisdom. She said " Just be prepared to get stuck over and over and over."

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 07:24 PM

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 07:26 PM

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 07:30 PM
We got some flipping action when the B class left the line with 37 racers.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 07:33 PM
It's hard enough trying to recognize racers at the beginning of the season with all the new riding gear and or different quads but about impossible in the mud.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 07:35 PM
Even with the sun shining for the afternoon it wasn't doing much to dry up the water soaked course.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 07:39 PM
Many racers were lucky they had someone with a power washer hosing the quads down when the race was over.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 07:42 PM
This section of ruts was about to get really crazy.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 07:46 PM
Mike Blanton tried to give Pat O'Neil a push through the ruts and ended up getting his tire lodged up under Pat's quad.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 07:51 PM
Racers would have to go around cause those two were really stuck. It took several people pushing and pulling to finally get them apart.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 07:54 PM
Still having to redirect the racers around the stuck like Chuck quads.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 07:57 PM
The afternoon racers have a little more experience than many of the morning racers.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 08:01 PM
Bradley Burrows turned 16 over the winter and he jumped right on up to the AA class and finished in the 6th spot. Even after getting run over by his own quad.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 08:04 PM
Nick Olberding was done for the day. He spent his time helping other racers.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 08:06 PM
Racers hunkered down to make it through some of the tighter sections.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 08:09 PM
Apparently somebody else was out of the race.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 08:15 PM
Blanton was making up time and would take 2nd in the +30 class behind Dan Wipper.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 08:19 PM
This part of the track seemed to be tacking up nicely.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 08:24 PM
Gotta love the logs across the track. Sometimes you hit them just right and sometimes not.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 08:26 PM
Kim Muzzerelli mixing it up with the boys in the A class.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 08:28 PM
Racers were still dropping off like flys from smoked clutches and other mechanical issues.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 08:31 PM
Miles Harris +40 class 4th place

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 08:33 PM
GNCC Pro racer Duane Johnson making a quick pit stop but his day was about to end with radiator problems.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 08:38 PM
This was the scene all over the track. If not getting a tow back to the pits racers also needed a little help getting out of some of the ruts and mud.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 08:42 PM
Johnny Kellison's goal was to just finish the race, it was icing on the cake to take the win in the +40 class. That's a nice win for him and the Bannedatatvnews race team.

Johnny & Monica
05-08-2008, 08:46 PM
That's going to be it for this round. Hoping for some dryer conditions at Fort Dodge, Memorial Weekend. Congratulations to all the racers and especially to Zac Johnson for his overall win.
