Well i really like my new 400ex but i think the gears are way too short. I can get to top speed in a matter of seconds and i have to shift way to often. Is there anything i can do to fix that?

change your gearing. up on the front or down on the back would work for what you want. 1 tooth on the front would be like 3 on the back. what ones sre they now?

I believe it is all stock.

my 440 came with 16/38 and has big top speed.

I switched to a 426 and it felt a little slower so I put a 14 tooth up front... It feels like a monster now with easy 3rd gear wheelies but I top out 5th at the same speed where I'd normally be at the bottom of 4th with the 16/38's...

I'm trying 15 for a happy medium.

i was running 13/38 and i though it was fun cause the front ned came off the ground every time i shifted, i changed to 15/38 and i love it. i still rev up, but i don't get passed in 5th gear now

if it is a 99-04 it comes with a 15 tooth stock. You want to go up a tooth on the front to get higher gearing or 2 down on the back equals about the same as going one up on the front.

If you are running out of gear you would be hitting the rev limiter are you? If not I would leave it the stock gearing becuase it isn't going to be able to pull anymore gear and your going as fast as its going to go with that motor.

I will never understand why people go down gearing it is geared so low stock don't know why you would want to go lower unless you were going to use it as a tractor and hook up to a plow.

I had the same problem with the stock 15/38 gearing. Around the MX track I was constantly shifting, I was in each gear for for like a split second before i'd have to shift.

I went up to a 16T front and a 39T in the rear to slightly "buffer" the large jump in the front sprocket (1 tooth up on the front is the same as going down 2-3 teeth on the rear). The 16T front sprocket makes a big difference in "stretching" the gears out...it made my quad a lot more ridable.

It will decrease your felt torque at the rear wheels though, so you might want to go up on the rear sprocket like I did to regain a little of that back. This is with running 18" rear tires however. If you are running 20" rears or taller, I think the 16T front will be a little tall for the quad ;)

my buddies and my 02' came with 14T front sprockets... i went to a 13 cause i was running 22's and i ran tight trails. now i run 15T w/ 20's on open trails and coal slag
