Need some of your expert opinions on here guys. I found this truck through craigslist and its also on ebay. Its an 96 f250 PSD. Do you think I should go and buy it? Anything to look out for?

My opinion is that this is a great deal and I want to get it.

Looks like a great deal those 7.3s in that body style are the best running trucks around.

I have a similar Ford. Do you know what the reserve is? It has a plow hook up and a fifth wheel hitch on it, so it probably did not have an easy life. It appears to be a clean truck. That truck does not have a solid front axle, and wears front tires quicker than my solid front axle. 200,000+ miles is about average for that year truck. I would check it out in person. It may look good in the pics, but be a big piece of crap in person. Good luck in your bidding. :)

I'd go take a look at it and bring it into a mechanic to see what it may need. Seeing that it may have been used as a plow truck , some front end parts may be worn out . Take a real good look at it before you make any decisions.

/\ I agree... Plow truck and has pulled a 5th wheel... Diesel trucks are strong and last a long time, but that truck looks like it was probably worked pretty hard.

Plus "the paint isnt the best, but it looks okay from 5 ft. "

and it's a ford, hahaha

5 grand is a good price for that truck.

Some people think diesel trucks run forever. The only difference in the truck you are looking at and the same truck with a gas motor, is the motor. It has the same axles, transfer case, tranny, and so on as a diesel truck. Yes, the diesel motor may run longer than a gas motor, but the other parts wear out the same. The only questionable part in that truck is the tranny. They have a history of premature failure. Seeing as that truck has had a plow on it, and has towed a fifth wheel, you might want to ask the owner/seller some questions about the tranny. Maintenance such as flushings and tranny oil and filter changes. Very expensive repair bills on diesel trucks. 5 to 8 thousand miles on it per year? That truck could last you forever. Have you looked at any other F250/F350's? Prices are dropping with the rise of diesel fuel. Here's a pic of mine. I have since replaced that cap with a hi rise one. I put about 3,000 miles on it a year. No problems other than an oil leak here and there.

the 99 and up had more power the older powerstrokes were turds but great motors i wish ford would have kept the 7.3 but due to emision laws they had to go with the 6.0

I have been looking around for the last couple of months and this is the best deal I have found so far. I asked the guy to get more pics for me and also what he towed with it and if he used the plow.

But its not looking good right now cause I cant get a loan. But I do have some family members that owe me.

All 7.3 turbo charged powerstrokes have almost identical HP and torque numbers. The 1994 and older were direct injected, and non turbo charged. They were not as powerful as the 1995 and up powerstrokes. The 6.0 had plenty of issues, but got better as time went on. Don't know much about the 6.4's, but they have some issues like any other new engine does until the bugs are worked out.

Don't sweat it. There are plenty of good used Ford diesels out there. I looked for 2 years for the right one. :)

Older 7.3's were really underpowered. Not a fan of the edge chip for that. Not the worst, but not the best. DP tunder or Tony Wildman is where it's at for 7.3's. Does he have gauges on that truck or just running more power completely carelessly? Truck looks ok from the pics, but I'd want to see and touch it first. Kind of high miles. Plus you and I know what NY winters do to vehicles. My little brother is looking at a 94 350 diesel tomorrow, 106K on it for $6000. I'd gladly pay the extra 1000 for half the miles

well, it needs a taligate,$350 painted, windshield $450. starter, $200? if it was a plow truck it was probobly beat pretty hard. the gooseneck is for hauling tandem axle hay wagons and cattle. so id say he better cough up some maintainence records or no deal. plus the 12 mpg, 4.60 a gallon???

Nick110
05-06-2008, 08:40 PM
Pretty sure you cant read.

It says he bought a tailgate for it and also said it was a bad battery not the starter. Which he is including a battery. Clearly says just got 17mpg the last time he drove it. And how do you know what he was hauling?

400exrider707
05-06-2008, 08:47 PM
5th wheel hitch means big trailer no matter how you look at it. What's important is how was the truck cared for? Also says the tailgate is rough and still needs to be painted...

17mpg doesn't seem too far fetched with it, but dont expect a big truck to get great mileage. It's a truck, if you really want it, you shouldn't even be concerned with that. You could probably get a little better with higher HP tuned chip, like the wildman unit. The advanced timing is really what gets the truck running good and yields good mileage, and a good tuner will do that for you!

My dad had a 95 Powerstroke 7.3, he bought it new back in 95 and recently got rid of it in 07 for the new 08 f250 6.4. The 7.3 was soooo reliable(engine wise) it had 300k when he got rid of it. The only problems was non engine related stuff, but it had 300k miles so it was expected. It was actually going to be my truck by the trans blew.

ok, so take $100 off my origional estimate, smart ***. you still need the get the tailgate painted. a good battery is $100 bucks. so just buy it and find out the hard way since you know everything.

you dont haul a snomobile trailer with a gooseneck. they are made for heavy loads, like double/tripple axle hay transport. moving horses ect. go ask a farmer how much weight he hauls with the gooseneck. if you get in a big hurry to buy youll be sorry

Nick110
05-07-2008, 12:39 PM
No need to get worked up here. I thought you towed like a 2 quad trailer with a 5th wheel? Right. And I am a farmer so I know how much the loads are.
