I let my buddy ride my 400EX and he said it's a dog and I should sell it as soon as I get the chance. I don't know what he is talking about since I rode his quad and my other buddies banshee and I really can't feel that much of a difference. Before I bought my bike I raced the Banshee on his Z400 and only lost by half a lenght and this was a long race where I almost had the Z up to top speed before we ran out of trail.

He hasn't had the chance to ride my bike and really get her cranked up but he's like dude my bike will definitely smoke your bike. I am not a hater and could really care less but was wondering what would win. Bone stock 2007 Z400 with gutted muffler and smaller front sprocket or my bike (see signature). I wouldn't even post this and just race him but we haven't had the chance yet.

ah this has been covered soooo many times..
but..ill throw out my opinion

the z400 is faster top end..
the 400ex has better bottom end..
in a long race he should pull u...short race may be different
really depends on riders..

after u guys race..tell him lets see whos bike lasts longer.. :D i bet ull win that :P

he probably will beat you if hes equal at riding to you

but not by much, the z400 has minimal power over a 400ex. they're basically the same

Yeah that's why I bought the 400EX. I didn't feel like working on my quad all the time and I knew Honda makes a really nice quality product.

you have 14tooth sproket so thats gonna make you loose some top end but gain bottom. Once you throw that HMF on there and open her up it will feel like a totally new machine. Some of my buddies had z400 and it was neck and neck all the time i could never tell a difference between either. balance point on a 400ex seemed better tho.

Yeah I agree. I mean my 2 buddies are the ones that basically got me back into it. We would go out riding and I would be the guy sitting on the beer cooler waiting for someone to come back and let me use their quad. So I got plenty of riding time on both the banshee and the Z. When I bought my quad I didn't really notice that big of a difference in performance as compared to the other bikes. I guess when comparing quads "getting smoked" is referring to a couple lengths. In my eyes that is not a big deal and is only in a drag races on long flat surfaces. Bring it to the trails and I will be all over both of them guys.

I am happy with my purchase of the 400!

i don't think there is a better sport quad made than the 400ex as far as reliability and need for maintenance...basically u just change the oil...lol...pretty simple...better than these 450s and other water cooled engines where you have to rebuild the top end every so often and adjust the valves alot....sure u get a little more power out of those machines ...but if your not like an mx racer is it really worth it?....not to me......i know a guy at work that has an xr 400 (same engine as 400ex)...he has dogged that thing and it is like in the 10-15 year old range and still going strong!

I've had mine since '02 still no problems, it's even a 440.

z's are known for the cam chain to wear out prematurely because the automatic tensioner keeps too much tension on the chain. my dads just got out of the shop with an $800 bill.. (i could have fixed it for $150 in an afternoon, but im not home..:o ) nothing a manual cam chain tensioner won't solve.. anyway, that, on top of other problems such as frame issues, magnesium engine parts in coolant... the list goes on. thats where the reliability issues come from.

The way I was looking at it was my buddy paid like over 8,000 for his Banshee new and my other paid over 6,000 for his 2007 Z. I paid 2,450 for my bike and put a couple hundred into it to get her where I wanted her, cleaned her up and it looks and runs great now. If they beat me by a few lengths I don't really care. Like was previously said, I have no quad payment!

i have had 2 z400s and 2 400ex quads.

the z400 likes to rev out more than the 400ex
the ex makes more power at a low rpm
and is much easyer to work on.
but what it realy come down to is what the rider is more comforable on. i traded a set up z400 for my 400ex that i have now. the guy i traded with fits on the z400 beter that i did and i'am more comforable on the 400ex.

depends on a lot of factors- exhaust, jetting, type of cam and if its bored out or not, size of tires- smaller are better for acceleration and bigger give more top end. i think a stock 400ex vs. a stock z400 would be a close call
