that i'm gonna stop dumping butt loads of money into my quad and save up for a dirtbike. i want a 250, but i cant decide on a 2 stroke or 4 stroke. generally the two strokes are cheaper(fyi im buying used), so thats what ive been leaning towards. i know theres already a thread on 250f vs. 450f. but i wanna know the pro and cons of a 250 2 stroke and a 250 4 stroke.

get the 4 stroke dude trust me. so much smoother, and for trails its a lot easier. i know from experience that 2 strokes are a ***** to ride in trails where as my 4 strokes have been just fine and are a breeze, yet still a challenge when it needs to be

the 250 2 stroke is like a 450 4 stroke.. they are monsters.

im doing the same thing you are, you actually asked me some opinions on the matter i think haha

go out and ride a 250f... then tell me what you want:p

IMO, 250 2strokes are NOTHING like the 450 4strokes. If they were, then they should have to run together, but now, they are saying that the 250 2strokes can't hang with the 450's, so now you can race a 250 2stroke with 250 4strokes. Pretty gay if you ask me, screws up everything! I say get a 4stroke man!

well, no matter what i get, i'm gonna be working my ***** off all summer long, but i'm willing to do that. ive got a landscaping job lined up. ruby soho, yea i did talk to you about it. i think i'm gonna keep my quad instead of selling it to buy the bike. i know if i sell it i'm gonna regret it. as of now i want the bike more, but a few months from now.......... who knows. i'll have to go ride one. the only bike ive ridden is a DRZ400, and it was FAST, but it handledlike crap. hopefully a 250 will be better.:macho

04-27-2008, 08:33 PM
Well if you think that handled like crap a 450 is gonna be even worse 250s handle so good and have such great power. It seems like everyone is getting bikes and talking about them lately wtf is up?

im switching to. i dont think its so much losing interest as it is money. its so much more expensive to race a quad at an amature level. i love riding mx and i can go higher, farther, and faster on a bike for a much less amount of money so its an obvious choice i think. i still think quads are much more fun to ride though, and i will always like quads more.

If you want power, go 2 stroke. If you want sometime more laid back rider friendly, go 4 stroke. I just picked up an 05 yz250f yesterday. Powerwise to the 200sx, it's night and day. The 200 will hands down hand wax it's @ss. The 250f is a lot more rideable for lack of terms. I haven't been able to get my yzf out on the track, but if it was like all the other yzf's I've ever ridden, I'll be happy.

IDK bout everyone else but I will never loose interest in quads it actually is getting worst for me, I really wanna buy a 250r in up coming years for a second quad, I'm a true quad lover at heart and will die being one. Bikes are cool but just doesnt spark interest with me.

Congrats on switching to a bike when ya get it.

Umm 250 2 strokes not staying with 450's? I've seen quite a few of the hang with 450's without a problem Now that they run in lites C it's going to be interesting! I'm glad the 250 2t's are running C. If I were racing, I'd be running a 250 2 stroke for sure, but I just want a easy riding 4 stroke.

i'm definately not getting out of quads by any means. i just got back from a quick ride and it was just as fun as it's ever been. i just feel like after 7 years riding quads, i wanna try something different. plus i use to have a little crf80 back when i was like 11 and i loved it. so i figured i'd save up and have both a quad and a bike.

why is that sand whoops killed ya? I'm used to them and I learned to ride them without much of a problem because thats basically what I grew up on. Dirt bikes in sugar sand like Croom will make you wish you had a quad. I know several people that moved down here from other states that had dirtbikes, rode at croom and said I need a quad its too hard with the sand being so soft. Once again if you learn on it you can do it.

i know how to ride on the sand. i ride at a sand pit here in ny sometimes. i love it on the ktm. no quads down there for me again. both the ex and ktm. i have the suspension setup prefect or me. i was standing up most of the time. but it still beat up a bit. deffintley be on the ktm next bike week for sure.:macho

Dude I wanted to get a bike for a while too and i still do but first i wanna build a race quad. I'll keep my 250x no use in selling it and I wanna build a 400ex (416) with full suspension and motor the whole 9 yards lol... I've been pricing up a lot of stuff and it's doable by my senior year (2 years from now lol). Bikes are cheaper but I feel IMO that quads are just way funner in every condition. Bikes in the wet stuff suck. But quads it's fun. No matter wet or dry MX or XC quads IMO are funner lol
Good luck with the bikes you guys.;)

When I feel lazy, I ride my buddy's raptor. Eh' if it was a perfect world I'd have a quad and a bike, but it's not. I'm more than happy with the ktm & yzf.

these are the same reasons im switching.. basically for MX reasons haha

i still like quads, but its nice to change, its not like once you switch its permanent, if i dont like bikes after a season or so ill sell it and get a 450 of some sort haha

if you don't have a lot of experience on a bike, you'll probably hate it for the first season. At first it's hard for some to pick up, but once you get the basics down it's fun.

I always wanted a bike rather than i quad but i found a nice deal on my 300ex so i bought it. Then a nice deal came along for a rm250 so i got it. Doesnt look or run bad. Starts first kick everyday and doesnt miss a beat.

After going through quite a selection of bikes, this has what I've settled with. 05 yz250f. I like it so far. Good all around bike.

This was my last bike. 2004 ktm 200sx. It was a rocket! Suspension wasn't that great, but the power was down right amazing.

kxrida, thats exactly the bike i want to get.

i wanna know how it compares to the 06 with the aluminum frame

KXRida
04-30-2008, 06:13 AM
I've ridden the 06's and you can tell some difference in handling, but not too much. The 05's and under are pretty top heavy, but the aluminum frames help to take this away. The 06's and up also have the 13.5:1 compression rather than the 05 and below's 12.5:1. With 13.5:1 that pretty good! There would be no need for an aftermarket piston, unless you feel the need to go to 14:1.

Like I said I much prefered my ktm's power, but I like the overall setup on the yzf. I do however feel it lacks in top end, so I'm in search for a pipe to open it up a little bit, then maybe I'll look into a cam for it.

im debating on the 05 or 06 most deffinatly, ive found many 05's for 2500-2800 and a few 06's for around 3000. is it worth it?

is there any loss in reliability with the 13.5:1 compression over the 12.5:1?

reliability wise, I haven't heard too much about the 13.5:1. Blue book on the 05's is roughly $3000ish, but they are going for less. If you can get an 06 for $3000, I'd say go for it. The 06's and up are awesome bikes. Not that the pre 06's aren't, but they run.
I am liking the yzf though. Here is a little step out that was right out of a corner and I would have a little bit of trouble sometimes on my 125's clearing it. Not a problem with the 250f.

Im pretty torn on the 2 years.. I think if i find a good deal on the 05 im gonna jump on it. because that way i can make some money off of my quad and get a klx110 aswell as the 250f.

If you get a good deal on an 05, I'd go for it. They are nice bikes. A little top heavy, but they run good.
