my friend can't get his 400 started now that he put the motor back together and I read somewhere on here something about a cam plunger (?) and I thought maybe he forgot to install it. can anyone post a picture of one or tell me what it would look like. he said he found something that looks like a small dowel pin and a spring, lol and i thought that might be it. where does it go? in the head or something? i've never saw one apart and don't know anything about internals.

that little pin and spring is indeed the plunger unit.It goes in the end of the cam if i remember correctly the left side of the cam.

Close, but that's not the spring and plunger. The parts pictured above all are contained within the stock cam's decomp assembly. The only way to get to them is to press off the cam sprocket carrier and disassemble the decomp unit.

This is the spring and plunger:

They go (spring first) in this small hole in the head.

They are only needed if the decomp unit is on the cam. Typically, only the stock cam uses the decomp. So if he's got an aftermarket cam that doesn't have a decomp unit on it, his starting problem is something else.

If you don't have the spring and plunger you can remove the decompression assembly from the stock cam.

Of course. It will not start with missing pieces.
