this might be a stupid question but ill ask anyways... ive been finding really good deals on 450f bikes around here. now i have never competitively riden a bike before but have riden a lot. i plan on racing and i dont have a lot of money to keep buying bikes. im afraid ill want more power after 2 trips to the track if i get a 250f first. the 450 bikes are around 230, 240 lbs, and my 400ex is (im guessing) around 375. so my quad is about 150 lbs heavier and i had no problem moving that around in the air and stuff. im about 5'10 and 160 lbs. though. but the size difference between a 250 and 450 isn't much. i just dont have the money to keep buying and selling bikes, so i was wondering if this would be an OK idea.

450 bikes are alot of bike, alot find it hard to use all the power, 250's are easier to control and easier to ride. Comparing a quad to a bike is no comparism, bikes will always be superior. My ktm 450exc, its hard to use all the power it makes. I had a crf450r, even harder to use all the power. By comparism, atv's are easier to use the power and typically lower in power/weight and hp. Where as, you buy the dirtbike uncorked, but you have to uncork, richen the jetting and modify the igntion/cdi to unleash all the power on atv's. I would get a 250f, more than enough power for most to use, 450's are just brutes, you will enjoy a 250 more too.

I just got an 07 yz450f a little over a week ago and I love it. This is the first dirtbike I've ridden since I was 7 on a pw80 and I had no problem going from my 450r to this. First time I went to a track I hit every jump, even ones i havent done on my quad. I went with the 450 because I am big and thought it would be more reliable than a 250f.:macho

250f are pretty beast. The 250 dirtbikes kinda surpise you how much power they have for the engine size.

i know a 450 is a lot of bike, but would i be wanting more power from a 250 right away? all im seeing for sale around here is 450s and thats all anyone is riding around here.

does anyone know of any comparison charts of the specs on the 250s and 450s? like the shootouts in the quad magazines. ive been looking and havent found any.

I am actually thinking about dumping this whole quad thing and getting a brand new crf250r myself. The 250 is definately the way to go becuase the power is so much more usable and if you watch races with 250 guys against 450 guys 250 guys are right up there if not in front.

I've had a

kx 125
Crf450
and now a yz250

I rode a
07 yz250f
07 kx450f
05 rm 125
06 kx 125 and many many other bikes

If it were up to me Id hands down be on a 250'f The 450 was rediculously powered and there was really no challenge in jumping anything, even 65-70 foot tripples were just a little momentun and a blip of the throttle on the 450. The 450's handling sucks, compared to my yz250 or the yz250f that I rode.

250 2 stroke - power of a 450 with 250F handling

250F Awesome handling, and you actually have to twist the throttle to go fast

450F - over powered with sucky handling

04-23-2008, 05:40 PM
Mine about how fast is a crf250r and are they good for trails and racing or just racing. I am thinking about just getting a crf250x or something.

im also selling my EX for a bike.

im really looking into the yz250f, reliable, and handles good. i doubt youll need more power, the 250f should make your EX feel slow haha

04-23-2008, 05:57 PM
Haha yea bikes are really fast I am looking the paper for a used one and maybe if I find a decent deal on one I will pick it up and maybe race it a few times or something but I have never raced anything before and I did a good bit of stuff to my trx this winter to race it but I probably wont get to race it too much. If anyone needs some mx parts for a 450r let me know I am going to be selling everything later on this year.

jesseweaver
04-23-2008, 07:38 PM
yea i think id be better off with a 250f but out of every 10 four stroke bikes for sale around here i bet 7 or 8 are 450s. i cant seem to find any good deals on 250s

04-23-2008, 07:43 PM
Yea man there are so many 450s for sale but Idk I really want to build up this 2004 450r that I have to make it like brand new with like everything but it all depends on how I do this year racing it the way it is and if honda comes out with a new 450r or not for me to decide on getting a bike.

jesseweaver
04-23-2008, 08:11 PM
one thing i know for sure though, i will probably be faster on a bike, but i wont do nearly as good in races. i see these B class guys racing full time with their own mechanics and trainers and stuff. and these guys my age that have been racing since they were 2. thats one reason id want to keep the quad.

i have a trx 450r and a crf250r and the bike really surprised me when i started riding it. the power of a stock 250f is unbelievable compared to my trx (i mean its half the motor and half the wieght). after riding my 250 for a few days i hopped on my buddies rmz450 and it was stupid! he said it makes 52hp stock and he has it piped and jet'd. i would rather ride my 250 than that 450 anyday, unless i just wanted to do some lazy riding. so my personal opinion is a 250f, but just make sure You buy what You want.

the 250f's are not bad bikes at all! If things work out I may have a valve eating crf sometime soon. Not my first pick, but I'll take it. I might also try to work out a deal on a yzf.

The 450f's are great bikes as well. Lots of useable power. Coming off of 200 and 250 2 strokes, I'd be better on a 450, but I like the 250f's as well. I want to race lites C, so a 450 would be out.

you gonna be racing at the rocket this weekend? im thinkin about takin the quad up but i have it all clean and i dont want to break anything before i sell it.

probably not this weekend. I have finals all next week. Have you been to rocket yet? They changed it a good bit. The whoops are killer. They aren't even whoops, they are now doubles... seriously. They took out the woods double, the tripple, and the double after that. I was up two weekends ago. Probably sometime in may I'm going to run up again. If I get the crf I'll be up there soon, so if you want to give it a ride you can go ahead.

i havent ridden a 450 bike, but my best friend used to have a CRF250F and i just rode it up the street, but i was very impressed. If i were to get a bike id get a crf 250f.

jesseweaver
04-24-2008, 05:37 PM
i havent been up this year at all yet, those changes dont sound too good though. the whoops were already nasty i dont really want to see them now. and they took the the triple-double out in the back along the side out? is there just a straight down there now, cause that sounds kind of stupid, that whole track is pretty much straights. and whats the woods double? the small one after the whoops and around that turn?

jesseweaver
04-24-2008, 05:39 PM
and i was at the dealership today, they had left over 07s the crf250 was 4900. that sounded pretty good to me, too bad i dont have the money now.

i've never road either 250f or 450f's, but my brother brought home his boss' son's crf150f, the new ones to replace cr80's with an identical looking motor to the 450's. i got on it, thinkin ah it cant be too much more pep than an xr right? this thing hauls balls. i'd say it'd eat a cr80 with no problem, its a blast to ride too. close to if not louder than my 426ex, and it rev's real quick, sounds just like a 250/450f. its awesome how much power they can get out of factory fourstrokes now. not to change your post, just really impressive. anyone else rode one of these? thinkin they came out in 07? idk. this one's an 08.

I loved the whoops they had before. I could cruise through them, now they suck to even roll through. No one up there could blast through them, even the fast guys were going around them. Yah the "woods double" is the one right after the whoops. It's like all straights now, so it's a little blah. Still a good track, but it was more fun with the jumps. It's a lot faster now, but I like the old track better.

did any other guys on quads fly through the old whoops? they looked almost impossible to me. i think they should just put about 4 doubles up through there they need a nice rhythym section.

and that400exguy, nice bike, how do you like it?

yah there were a few guys last year that flew through them. I mean like just as fast as the bikes, but honestly, I don't even think a quad could roll them. They are pointed and about 2 1/2' deep. Honestly I think they kinda killed the track, it's not nearly as fun as it used to be.

wow those are some nice bikes guys. i would definately get the 250f if i were you. i used to have a crf250r, and it was a great bike. i only got rid of it to get my yfz. i have a yz 125 now, and its alot of fun, but im also thinking about getting another 250f. they have tons of power, especially compared to a stock quad, and they handle great. i just dont know if i can take not having a quad.

I don't think you'll be hungry for more power with a 250f. They have like 33hp stock, and hold peak power for like 5000 rpms:eek: damn.

It'll defiitely make your EX feel slow.

Picking it up tomorrow. 2005 yz250f with all most 0 time on it. Seriously. My buddy bought it new and moved out of state 2 weeks later. His loss is my gain. Heck I fired it up and you can still smell all the coatings burning off on it!
