Well sense im waiting for my motor from Colby I decided to start painting some of my parts on my quad hopefully to get more votes for QOTM. so far I only got the front motor mounts done but my rear hubs and my chain shield is in progress, I plan on doing the front hubs and my battery bracket, and hopefully my lower A-arms just trying to figure out how to blast them. Anyways heres some pics.

you do extremely clean work. what are you painting this your parts with? and that is the name of the color you are painting with? if you dont mind me asking

Honda#4

It's just rattle can paint, the color is blue metalic.

steffen_ex
04-23-2008, 08:25 PM
that looks amazing, i would have never thought it came from a rattle can, that color is the best, i hope next fall to paint my whole frame that color with orange plastics, i think that would look preatty cool, good work dude!!!!!!

Honda#4
04-23-2008, 09:05 PM
Thanks man! I would kill to have my frame that color too but I dont have the time to do that. Thinkin about blasting my lower arms sometime this week cuz im getting new stickers to go with them so I figure might as well go for a new look then my front end will look brand new again, to bad my swinger aint blue then it would be nice but theres no way im blasting that when 1 bag alone did my rear hubs.

I would of never thought you painted that with a rattle can. are you sand blasting parts down to origanal metal or just painting over. i hope to see some more pictures of the parts you get painted.

Honda#4

My parts all get blasted to bare metal, except for my arms cuz they were chrome plated and on the bottom the plating is rusting so I figure I might as well try and do something about that, im thinkin I could blast it some what good enough to hold the paint. We'll see how she goes.

Painting over paint never holds up I've already done that before, its always best to try and get it down to bare metal thats how the paint sticks to the metal, by blasting you leave little pores that in time fill up with paint for a nice smooth finish then after your done painting you clear coat to seal the paint up, that makes a hard shell so if you bump the item on something your paint won't fall off.

For my painting process I do a 2-3-3 step, 2 coats primer,3 coats paint, 3 coats clearcoat, if I forget sometimes how much I put on I just vary the steps.

right on right on, 2-3-3 paint steps i like that, i think i might try that out this weekend and see how it comes out. thanks for the info. best of luck with the arms if you get a chance can you send a before and after picture of them. I am Interrested in seeing what they looking like before you get ahold of them. best of luck on them.

Heres a few pics, and one more tip never rush the painting process it takes a bit more time to let everything dry, what I do is after every final coat say ur at the end of the painting stage let it dry a day before clearcoating it that way the clear sticks better to the paint, but its all up to you and the paint you use I cant tell you whats good and bad you have to experiment with all the paints, usually clearcoat is all the same and so the primer weather its the sandable kind or not. I go to either Walmart or Fleet Farm for my paint.

I just pray that I can blast them somewhat good enough

Brandonkendall0
04-25-2008, 11:27 AM
lol. i just hope you have a lot of sand and a big @$$ compresser

Honda#4
04-25-2008, 11:34 AM
300lbs of sand should get it good, they wont be down to bare metal though due to the plating. I think the best I can do is blastem enough to the nickel finish. I'm gonna do a tad bit on the bottom to see what shes gonna do, the crappy weather were having is not the best for blasting.

Honda#4
04-25-2008, 11:42 AM

Brandonkendall0
04-25-2008, 01:01 PM
very nice, now get to work on those arms i am waiting to see those lol. very clean i am digging it.

o yeah i think 300 lbs of sand will do

Honda#4
04-25-2008, 06:06 PM
Well after a hugh *** fight with the cotter pins I got the arms off, blasted suprised it barely took alot of sand to blast enough to get a rough surface, and I gave them one coat of primer so far everything is lookin great. Heres some pics and please forgive me for the junk in the background.

looks great man, funny you say 2-3-3 process. i rattled canned my whole bike recently, due to not a big enough fund to powdercoat. i didn't sand blast anything but i sanded my hands off until bare metal lol. i used the cheap primer due to its actually pretty porey if thats a word lol and its nice and thick. then 3 coats of color and 3 coats follow of primer, i also sanded in between every coat except the last of color and of course clear. stuffs turnin out great! keep us updated. i'll try and get some pics over from my frame.

atvhonda-rider
04-25-2008, 07:49 PM
here's a pic of my frame before i re-assmbled. on my a-arms and swinger i sanded then did a spray on bed liner (for durability) then followed that with black rattle can with clear to give it a shiny black textured look.

Looks great but I tell ya i've done the sanding thing and it dont work it actually closes the "pores" on the metal creating a smooth feeling but nothing for the primer to stick too, but hey if it worked for ya im glad again your quad looks great.

I'll be putting the first coat of paint on late night tomorrow, i'll post pics when I get r done.

atvhonda-rider
04-26-2008, 12:05 PM
i used a high grit auto body sand paper, and i chose that due to i've heard it might close the pores, it's holding up so far, and thinks for the heads up! good luck on your project as well and thanks. looks great man.

I've been painting sense I bought my quad so i've gotten pretty good at it, every year I do something different untill I've found the right color and i'm pretty sure I have.

Honda#4
04-27-2008, 05:08 PM
Update arms are all done and clear coated just letting them dry a day or two then tomorrow hopefully my stickers will come. I plan on trying to find some clear vinyl and putting over the arms so the paint holds up great and wont wear out, but till my motor is all done I may just put them on without the vinyl so I dont have so many blocks holding my quad up.

I'd show ya but I dont ride tracks, im just a very agressive rider. Everything will hold up great i'm gonna put clear vinyl on the arms though that should hold up great then, I usually paint my quad every year trying to find the right color for my quad and I think I wont be doing anymore painting after this, my arms were gettin rusty on the bottom and thats pretty much how this all got started.

Yea it sure will, the blue and chrome arms are really gonna set the front off good as for the rear its gotta stay red sense I dont have a place to burn the PC off. I'll sure be glad when I get my parts back from Colby I hate to rush the guy and send him a million PM's but man I wanna ride so bad. I can already feel the power im gonna get from this motor LOL!

I dont dont have a problem with getting mud on it's no big deal cuz I clean my quad when i'm done riding reguardless if it has mud on or not .It's a darn shame to see quads not maintained properly by its owner to be put away with mud still on. I wish I could take quads away for stuff like that. Thats a reall big pet peeve of mine nothing goes away dirty.

youve inspired me to do some painting...

Honda#4
05-17-2008, 08:17 PM
The bars are going buh-bye to, gonna buy IMS/Roll Handlebars pretty soon.

Thanks Nick, Im glad im inspiring that cuz for people that dont have alot of money for PC paint holds up just as great if done the right way untill more money is there for the correct way.

05-17-2008, 08:19 PM
yeah stock bars without the plastic piece look so goofy maybe they would look better with a bar welded across them and put a bar pad on that or something, but your getting new ones so whp cares

Honda#4
05-17-2008, 08:46 PM
I painted the stock bars chrome but it didnt turn out so good it was some crappy bumper chrome junk which after learning is nothing but junk paint but this is the last im painting the bars I rather spend money on new ones that are already brushed aluminum.

Nerfs are coming on Monday so I should have them bolted on by then and I just got my motor all done so that will be going in sometime this week just mainly have to buy filters and oil.

I can always take it off and have pappy PC it blue or something but i'd like it to match which probably be hard. I dont feel like ruining a PC'd swinger and theres no way i'm blastin it maybe if I just use my orbital sander with a 100 grit it might ruff it up enough IDK.

There the original plastics, i'm still deciding on weather or not to cut them, the stickers are coming off for sure, I plan on putting tape on the lights to make it look alittle meaner. I'm a bit weary of messin with the swinger though if the paint dont stick im screwed.

Pappy
05-19-2008, 09:12 PM
You can paint right over the pc'd swinger.

Just diassemble it, and sand it to break the surface tension, then prep it like you would any other part. As youve already learned, blasting it off is like pissing in the wind, and with out having access to a burn off oven you are out of feasible ways to remove it. Avoid the chem strip as it just makes a mess.

Looks good, you can be proud youve done it all yourself and I look forward to seeing you continue with your project.

Thanks Pappy for the big question I needed answered, and yes it was such a pain even to blast the hubs 200lbs+ to blastem, I had sand in the shower for days LOL!.

I appreciate the comment also Pap it's been alot of hard work and money well spent to get everything done and bought the way I planned it out. The next rebuild I plan on doing some PC work.

Nothing on heaven or earth could make me get rid of my Roll swinger for a cheaper one or anything Roll on my quad I stick to the best and thats what I get only, I appreciate the thought but im going to pass, I'm gonna buy the Roll handlebars plain and simple I really dont need $300 handlebars, plus this is coming outta my quad fund(Paypal) and I only can buy what I sell unless I can sell everything then yea I would consider them. I rather pay for the Roll Design name and go with that cause I know everything will be perfect and theres no worries.

Well I decided to rip the ugly stickers of the quad today, took forever and I didnt realize how many stickers I had. Everyone is right not having stickers on really does make it look 10X better.

i got a pair of ims heal guards, they look sweet but they wont bolt up to my stock foot pegs, which i knew anyway, but is there a different brand of peg besides ims that will be the right size for those heal guards?

All I have is sat on it. The Roll Nerfs are coming Wednesday, I've been trying to get to the dealer for oil and filters and such but they have the most retarded hours ever plus im still working 10+hours a day and havent figured out my Clutch problem, I may put the stock lever back on to see if that works then I know my Clutch perch is junk, if that aint the problem I know my cable is shot.

About the Heelguards you have to drill holes for the stock pegs IDK if the Blingstar pegs will work with the heelguards or not usually its best to buy Roll with Roll that way it all works together.
