After cody's little mishap friday evening with his go cart, we thought we dodged a bullet by just getting stitches. A call late this afternoon from the hospital specialist had us heading to a bigger facility where they preformed surgery on his knee. he went in at 8pm and was out around 10:30pm and now has a few screws to add to his list of things tweaked:p He broke the socket of the femur just above the knee. (I still cant believe he walked back to the house and spent the last 2 1/2 days on just ibuprofin)

The wife is staying with him this evening and I will be back there tomorrow. His room has internet and while it sucks, I will get the site loaded for him to see this thread.

He will be out for atleast 8 weeks and depending on physical therapy may be able to return to competition at some point over the summer.

I will spare everyone the pictures that are posted in the other thread as it takes forever for them to load there anyway and he doesnt really feel like seeing them again.

Jason- he is in Winchester in room 406, you are welcome to come see him as I know it would cheer him up! He should be there for atleast a few days as they monitr it for infection and remove the drains they have installed.

QJ- its one of the hardest things i've ever had to do and the first time i've had to look him in the eye's and lie to him:p He was so scared of being put under for the operation and kept begging me to promise him he would be fine. Him and I shoot straight with each other and I explained the dangers that operations pose but in my heart I knew he would be fine. (The whole time holding back tears knowing that it is all a risk)

When he came out to recover he was combative and was highly pissed he couldnt hold his eyes open. He doesnt feel anything tonight thanks to a healthy dose of morphine but the poor kid will be in agony over the next few days. They have him in a brace so he is imobilized and his knee is packed with ice to remove the swelling. His brother was so confused that he was upset and that sure got the wife cranked up:p

Eviltanker, I know exactly what cody will say, and thats for you boys to stay safe as your in combat and not to worry about anything besides getting home soon and safe. Infact he helped pack your care package the other day! he was very proud he could do something for you guys and your thoughst are much appreciated!

I will take along a camera and get some pics of him tomorrow.

I always hate getting put under too,so I know how he feels. MY Dr. had to give me a very strong "cocktail"as he put it to chill me out at Pre-Op(didnt work either! :p )
Morphine is good stuff though.:D

Hang in there Cody. You'll be good as new before you know it. I went through total knee replacement on both knees at the same time at the ripe age of 34 and recovered much faster than I thought. You're young and tough and I'm sure you'll be back on the horse...er... gokart/quad...in no time.

Speedy recovery to ya big guy. And don't forget to do exactly what the physical therapist says and you'll be good to go in no time. :muscle:

It's gut-wrenching watching a kid go under.

When my daugher broke her arm, she didn't really understand what the needle and IV were for. She says afterwards "Geez, I can't believe I just took a nap.." She just couldn't believe, in the midst of the trauma and the fear, that she would be tired enough to sleep. Funny.

Cody is getting about that age to be interested in the nurses...

i had a similar injury when i was 28 (about 4 years ago). i blew out my acl, crushed my miniscus and fractured the socket of my femur. it actually healed pretty fast which surprised me because of my age and the wear and tear that my knees have been through during my snowboarding career. the most important thing to do is rehab it very hard and you will be out there in no time. best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Well...they cut open the bandage to remove the drain and check out my cut. It actually looks better than before! The drain came out fine and the nurses are out getting me some new bandages. The doc will check out the cultures tomorrow to see if they are still negative to infection. He says that if they are still negative, I'll be able to go home sometime tomorrow.

Tommy, thanks for the advice on the femur.

Once again, thank you all for the support and well wishes.

Hey Cody, I have been thinking about you, and ofcourse, I get updates nearly every hour from Pappy on how you are doing, which is refreshing to hear things are going well. You are surrounded by a bunch of people that really care about you, and you will pull through this injury and be back to racing in no time.

I hope they release you from the hospital tomorrow so you can get home and start relaxing, but while you are in the hosptial, it is ok, to hit on the nurses. Just make sure mom isn't in the room, lol.

Jason, thanks again. It meant alot to him and us having you all swing by! He did get up tonight and made it to the bathroom on crutches, which he will have to do for the P/T people before they will let him come home.

If all goes well, we get to bring him home tomorrow....and hopefully he can heal up and be back out and running in no time.

Pretty depressing news today. The knee has developed a staff infction and he wont be coming home today. He will have to have an IV in for the next 6 weeks.

Does that mean he will have to stay at the hospital for 6 weeks or can he come home with an IV?

Pappy

From what understand, if the cultures check out ok tomorrow , he will be released and have an IV at home. I geuss a nurse will come by daily to tend to him. he will also have to be homeschooled for the rest of this year.

Well, he is in good spirits, how I have no idea:p

The medicine that is supposed to tackle the infection caused an allergic reaction which was expected by the docs. He turned red and blotchy, temp went up and started itching. Some Benedryl stopped it but they will re-administer it at 2 am (so much for a good nights sleep...lol)

I did not go down tonight due to how expensive gas is and we will be (fingers crossed) bringing him home tomorrow. Sure sucked not seeing him but Momma has set up residence on the couch beside him and has been there since monday 24/7. (He is about 1 1/2 hours from home.) I have to leave to go cover a race so the day he is home will go by way to fast for me.

The line they are going to run into his arm will remain for 6 weeks and he will be undergoing all kinds of check ups, tests, P/T, etc etc etc and I have to get him a wheel chair. I figure we got a good 2 weeks before he can actually travel anywhere to use it but it sounds like a good excuse to bling that ***** out!

Thanks to everyone that has been calling here, emails, pm's and ofcourse the posts in this thread. I know the support has helped me and from hearing Cody perk up as he talks about it, it has gone along way to making his spirits higher. I dont know what I will do going to this race (and probably the next few) as he is my traveling buddy, pack mule and drink fetcher:p Hell I aint even left and I miss him:blah:

I would try to get my other son to tag along, but he would do nothing but chase skirts and I am pretty sure it would take an act of God to get him away from tending to his brother.:p

thanks for the update kenny. i remember when i was in a straight leg brace it was the worst thing i could think of couldnt bend my knee it itched it ached. i had torn the cartelege under my knee cap almost in half. luckly i didnt have to have surgery at that time but i prolly will have to in the future just make sure little man stays off his leg and doesnt try to get back to things to early. i semi listened to the doctors but i got back to playing sport alittle early cause i wanted to play so bad and now im kicking myself im 21 and some days i cant even stand up if im kneeling down for a few minutes and i can hear grinding in my knee sometimes. so cody just take it slow make sure your healed up and the doctors give the ok and youll be back racing in no time. good luck to the whole family mike

Pappy-- our school has what they call homebound schooling for the ones that will miss school for an extended time. A teacher will come by everyday or night and help with homework go over lessons etc. You might check with your school and see if they offer that. The school pays for this. They ask a teacher to volunteer to do this and somtimes they pay the teacher. Get well Cody. mommab

We are expecting a visit from teh school on wednesday to go over what all he needs to do etc to finish out the year. I dont expect any real issues.

Twice a day we have to give him antibiotics through the PICC line. The wife has it down pat and the nurse has only been here once.

the PICC line is a PITA, however with the infection we know its required

I remember all too well what it was like being layed up .... 8 months in a cast , many more months of physiotherapy ... it sucks but things could have always been worse.

I've also had a PICC line ,after having intestinal surgery to make sure I was getting enough nutrients since I couldn't eat. Sure wierd watching on the monitor as they follow the line up to the heart.

I just found out today that I'm going to head south to Toronto and possibly have another major surgery to remove some more of my intestine. :ermm: Oh the joys of being in the hospital !!!!

I've been off work and college since the start of the month and was in the hospital for a few days a couple of weeks ago. Oh yeah ... when they take Cody's PICC line out , make sure you grab the camera and snap pictures . He going to have to flex his arm like crazy to make sure no air enters the artery ..... then he can take the picture and pass it around to all the chicks and watch them flock to his feet. ;)

4 weeks to go before that line comes out:p I know he hates that line more then the leg injury!

twice a day for 2 hours he gets hooked to a ball (thats what it looks like) full of antibotics, then more stuff is added.

he is doing good tho, he crutched his way out to the ranger tonight and we took a nice slow ride aorund the property just so he could get out of teh house and front yard:p

Im glad he tries to stay active. The other day he was wanting to wrench on his ride...today we parked him under a tree in the shade while he did his homework. He supervised me and the wife on how to plant the rest of our garden:p

ha man thats to funny, seeing him try to work on the nerfs from the wheel chair. ive seen your threads about him riding and what not the past few years and thats one hell of a tuff kid! im sure he can stick this out, hes very lucky to have two great parents. dont know if u said, but how long he have to have that leg brace on, ya'll know yet? get well soon cody. and im sure you will be lookin forward to a damn near race ready 300ex by the time your all healed up so thats gonna be a huge plus!!

The brace will remain on for the entire 6 weeks....and the doctor said that he may cast him after the surgery wounds heals to a point. That wont make CJ happy but if that is what it takes then that is what it takes. We see the doc on wednesday so maybe some new info then. If the surgery had not taken place, he would be in a cast from his ankle to his hip.

He cringes when they come draw blood or work on him, but I keep telling him that he walked home on a broken leg and never shed a tear...suck it up
:D

Good news today.

The stitches and staples are out, and they are allowing him to bend his knee up to 90 degree's but no weight on the leg for 6 weeks.

We stopped by to pick up school work on the way home and all of his teachers are giving him A's for teh rest f the year and excusing him from final exams. I geuss it pays to always do your best and be respectful as every teacher wrote to us that based on his performance this year they had no problem keeping his grades where they were when he was injured!

He was very relieved. He is an Honors student and the work load is pretty intense. The one teacher asked if we could help him disect a frog:ermm: We cant due to the PICC line and risk of any bacteria, but I will send him in a few pics of Cody and a few of the deer he has killed just so the teacher knows he has a working knowledge of what the inside of an animal looks like..LMAO!

CJ had his first physical therapy today, which went well. Eveything appears to be healing well and on track. We arent sure when they will allow him to try and walk and the phys. therapist will consult with the surgeon to see when they feel the screws and stuff in his leg will withstand the pressure etc.

On another note, they told us today that cody had also broken his collar bone last year when he broke his elbow:p

I thought he would be doing phys therapy before now. They had me doing it and walking the day following surgery...but then mine was different. Good to hear things are improving.

Hopefully the collar bone has healed well on it's own then. Sounds like a rough time he's had over the last year or so.

Cody just left the bone doc, and he is allowed to walk with support and he still cant apply much weight on it, infact the doc would prefer no weight and only for brief lengths. Another 4 weeks before they want him walking on his own.

The bone itself is healed, the doc is more concerned with the cartlidge healing properly at this point. We pushed Codys elbow last year when he broke it and he has alot of issues with the cartlidge around it (popping, swelling etc) so we will be following the docs advice....however Cody refused crutches and told everyone he was walking out of the hospital today because that was his goal..lol

They are enroute to the other doc right now to have the PICC line removed. This has been giving us more trouble then the knee and we will be glad when its gone. I will update when I get the call that everything is done.

If you will be at the Unadilla MX National this weekend, Cody will be with me so be sure to say hello! He has missed the racing terribly:(

I agree . Tell him to take his time.... listen to the doctors . There's no use pushing something right now and risking re-injuring himself . Take the time now to heal up and it will give him a LOT less problems in the future.

CJjust called and is on his way home, the PICC line is history! Thank god, that thing was nuts. Twice a day for 2 hours we had to administor the antibiotics to him. and the line in his arm prevented him from being mobile do to its location and the crutches.

I asked how he was feelinga nd he never replied, he just asked when we could leave for unadilla:D

seeing he walked out of the woods on his own witha broken femur i would agree, i iwsh i was that tough:p it just proves that the human body can do incredible things when our mind isnt telling us to quit or give up!

thanks paul and greg, i will make sure cj reads this when he gets home

Them damn PICC lines are a PITA. I remember having that in and I couldn't do anything with my arm.

He sure is a tough one to walk out with a busted femur. I know when I had my leg busted , I tried to get up and walk .... I took one step then realized something wasn't right... I think it was the fact that my foot was turned around and pointing in the other direction. :ermm:

But the mind is a very powerful thing .... I still had enough calmness in me to tell one of the guys to go call the ambulance and to grab my cell phone out of the truck and bring it back to me. In the mean time , another buddy came to see me and I took my belt off and tied it around the top of my knee to stop the bleeding . Cell phone got back to me , I call my parents .. no answer so I left a message on their answering machine :huh ... then I called my grandparents to let them know what happened.

I never really went into any kind of shock until the medics told me they were going to move my leg . I was holding on to 2 guys hands , and once the medics were done I tried to let go of their hands , but my muscles were stuck and they had to pry my hands open. Other than the initial dose of good morphine to transport me to the helicopter , I never got any other meds other than Tylenol #3.
The mind is powerful !!!

Good to hear things are improving. I'm sure Cody is happy to be on his own 2 feet again even if it is limited.

I agree with him about the picc line being a pain...had one when I had my knee surgery and the picc was almost as bad as the rest of the crap they put me through. I thought they'd never take the dang thing out of me...of course it was only for a few days or so.:o I was ready to tear the thing out the first day. In fact I almost did when I tried to retrieve my tv remote from the hospital floor. Not only did they put meds through mine but they had to keep flushing the thing out nearly every hour....or at least it seemed like it.

Good luck Codeman.

2 more weeks until he should get the ok from the docs to start walking. We know he can walk, infact a clap of thunder and a close lighting strike yesterday sent his crutches flying and he RAN 3 or 4 steps onto the porch!:p
