The kid has a 2001 Yamaha Warrior. Is it possible to retrofit one of the older pull start recoil units onto it? If so is it a matter of removing the existing blank case cover and installing a recoil unit or are there other mods required (different shafts, etc)?

I'm rather interested in the answer as well. I've got a friend with a Warrior, and the info might come in handy.

OK, I've gotten mixed information. A few folks I've talked to told me that the recoil starter and crank pulley are a direct bolt on to later models. They also suggested getting the exhaust valve cover from an '87-'89 engine since it has the compression relief valve on it to assist in pull starting.
Others have told me that it will not simply bolt on as there have been changes in the cases. Additionally they've said that the lifters and configuration of that part of the head have changed and that the compression relief valve cover may not work.
I'm confused. Anybody actually do this instead of simply speculating?

yup its possible. in fact you can make use of the components from the mid to late nineties big bear (http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/yamaha-atv-big-bear-4x4-yfm350fwbk-1998/o/m6989)

.... and also there is an "engine alternate (http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/yamaha-atv-warrior-yfm350xk-1998/o/m8049) " starter assembly that can be gotten for the '98 warrior
