Alright here is my problem. I have a 2002 400ex that is making me frustrated. I was having some issues with it so i took it to the dealer. they wanted 1700 dollars in parts and labor to fix it. I said screw that and took it home. i bought the parts and put it together myself. It wouldn't run so i took it to a guy who is pretty good with them. He couldn't get it to run either. He says everthing looks right and it is in time, but it just doesn't want to start. It turns over but just won't start up. Does anyone have any suggestions on what the problem might be?

Where is the plunger located? what do you mean by lost? like fell down into the engine or just lost all together.

An engine needs fuel/fire/compression to run. Check these 3 things before you proceed.

all of these are good. Everything is in check but doesn't want to start. it sounds like it wants to though. I am not sure that we have the plunger in though. how do i locate it or see if it is there?

You can have your cam 180 degrees out and it will still appear to be in time. If you have an aftermarket cam you don't need the cam plunger. What cam do you have?

Just FYI, there's no such thing as 180 degrees out of time on a 400EX.

How can i tell if the cam that i have in is a hot cam. i know the guy that had it before me did some modsbut i am not sure if he changed this. I took it apart again and there was a spring in it but no plunger. Would they have taken the spring out too if they put in a hot cam?

If i have enough compression should i even be worrying about the plunger?

The spring should have been removed too if it was a hotcam.

Okay so i put the plunger in and it will run now. But only for like 2 seconds. It pretty much starts then stops immediately. It smokes pretty bad too. is this because i have been working on it and there is oil on stuff? What should i do?

It works! I had the gas in the on position and there wasnt much gas in it. i put it on reserve and now it runs fine. Thanks for all of your help!
