My son's 02 400ex beats my 02 400ex even though I have mod's and his doesn't.
heres my mods supertrap IDS2 slipon with race core and 14 disc installed. 162 main jet,42 pilot jet, 16 tooth front sprocket, no air box lid 20X10X9 bandits out back, uni filter,.

heres his bike stock except for k-n filter and 152 main jet

I weigh 60 pounds more then him to.
we are neck and neck till 5th gear then his bike pulls away. we even switched quads and his is still faster .

I should be kickin his butt somebody help me out here it's embarrassing

thanks in advance
:o
thanksgiving day
OK we went riding today and I tried a few thing's.
first we switched air filter's same result his quad is faster
then I put a set of holeshot's on my quad he's still faster
then I went down on the main jet first to a 158 then a155 then a 152 I stayed closest with the 155 so that's where I'll leave it.
All thats left is the 16 tooth front sprocket I''ll try goin back to the 15 on tomorrow. but I really don't think that's it.
what do you guys think:(

HaHa just face it he's a better rider. Tell him to let you win or he's grounded. LOL :blah

are you saying that his quad is faster with you on it?
maybe go down a size on the front sprocket instead of a tooth larger, stock is 15, your'e at 16, try a 14. or maybe he just knows how to ride, which means you taught him well!!

i dunno could it maybe be your jetting.... i cant think of anything else.....i no if your jetting is wrond you can have less low and top end than stock

yes I am saying his quad is faster with me on it
wouldn't going down on the front sprocket give me less top end , thats where his quad pulls away

I think you need to drop to 14th front sprocket for starters.

well then it sounds like your main jet is messed up so try a few other diff jets in there and see what happens im runnin a 158 now with the lid and my mods maybe your a little rich?? idk

is ur throttle adjusted correctly? if u have gearing for more speed and he still pulls u, then it sounds like u rnt getting enough rpms.

if you drop down to 14 tooth sprocket you lose top end. if you have a 16 tooth sprocket you gain top end and lose low end.

switch the air filters for one race
my friend and I have identical 2001's and his has always had a little higher top speed but weight is a big factor because when we switch he still wins on mine but our motors always felt different [mine low end power and his a lot of top end pull]
maybe when your son is on your bike he isn't given it all its got to piss you off
I would check my throttle cable also and go back to a 15 tooth front sproket
I know on paper a 16 should have a higher top speed but maybe the motor isn't reaching the rpm's where it makes the most hp

I would drop back to stock gearing since it's only a slip-on you have and you might be able to reach higher RPMs. I could be wrong though. He didn't grind the welds out of his header pipe or anything like that did he?

Maybe it's you're age! The younger you are the quicker the reaction time. Our maybe you a 250r! My real opinion is try changing the jets or maybe a different spark plug temp. Maybe you're engine runs hotter. The hotter the less horspower. Could it be something with the timing of the cam?

Just a couple of thoughts. I'd check the throttle cable like crashinmatt and sharpshooter said to make sure your carb slide is opening all the way. The Bandit tires look to be heavier than the stock Honda tires. Possibly the combination of the larger front sprocket and more rolling mass of the rear tires could be causing the top speed problems? My 2 cents.

well, its probly ur throttle cable + tires + sprokets, gear back to a 15, ur tires are heavy, ajust ur cable till it has almost no freeplay, just a tad, and u should be able to beat him

does your he still have the stock silencer on his 02 if he does try changing back to your stock silencer ive heard a lot that if you dont have any motor work done that any aftermarket exhaust will make you lose power i always see my friend beat piped 400exs up comp hills in oregon and all he has done to his is a 14t front sprocket. same thing happened with his dads craptor his uncle who also has a craptor but it is stock and his dad would race up comp hill and his dad had a dmc exhaust and the stock craptor beat it.

well that 60 pounds aint helping ya, my 400 when it was stock destroyed this other boys because he weighed about 40 pounds more than me and also i shifted alot later than he did , he shifts way way way to early, i hear him, but it isnt only that, at 2nd gear i cant even see him anymore unless i turn my head completley around,

bump up your main jet allittle

you are running to lean on top end

i bet if you go up one or two sizes you wil be set

but no doubt bout it you are runing lean and your motor is choking out at the top of the rpm range but what ahppens is your main jet controls everything after 3/4 trottle the pilet jest controls everything before it

Pipes usually give more top end. Put the higher rev box on

Many things are causing your problems---First, go to stock tires--LIGHTER --easier to turn over. Your jetting is way rich.. Your bike will never pull a 16 tooth gear. go 14 or 15, I would try the 14, If by wild chance you can hit the limiter with that then go to the 15. It is a perfect example of what many people do with mods... Many times there bike is just louder, not any faster.

Weight. It is as simple as that. I weigh only 130 pounds and I can pretty much smoke any 400Ex with the same mods or a little more mods then me. Cause i am lighter then most other ppl.
