11-25-2002, 10:18 AM
did anyone see the article in the latest dirtwheels that said service honda will be releasing new 400ex quads with CR250 motors in them.. going price is like $8000. The quad will be all stock components except the motor..different i think. What's your alls thoughts on this.. this could be the answer for everyone crying about the 250R return..

If thats true or just a rumor, Who knows. That price is really pushing it. That motor is to fast for the stock chassie. If it was more aftermarket stuff on it, it would be worth it.

I had talked with one of the guys from service honda a while back and they were trying to make a swap kit so that you could put a cr250 in your 400ex chassis and it would be a relatively easy swap so that once you were used to it you could swap from 1 to the other in an hour or so. It was a great idea but i havent seen that released yet either. to me that would be the best idea. you could have a 4-stroke and a 2-stroke quad and only need 1 of everything

Yeah some guy already did that with a 250r motor and a yz400 (bored to 426) It was in a 400ex chassi too. It is a good ideah just I would rather stick with one motor instead of too!

They better produce it why they still can with the emissions and stuff. That would be a naughty machine. But for 8,000. that thing better have an aftermarket suspension and a few other things!

It would be cool, but I agree with everyone else.. $8000 seems a little steep..:blah

11-25-2002, 11:57 AM
Well it's not a rumor or a conversion,,you buy a brand new 400ex out of the crate with a cr250 motor in it. Since the 400ex chassis was molded after a 250r chassis your basically buying a 250r with a few minor adjustments from what i gather. the suspension is the same stock 400 to 250r..so yeah the suspension would need beafin up,,but no more than what you would do to a stock 250R..

Honda trying to make a grab for atv domination again... oh no.. a big fail.. I'd buy a cannondale for the outrageous price they want for a new 250r...... Just take your already beefed up 400ex and put in the 250 motor.. probably cheaper

I was led to believe that a CR250 engine in a quad frame was prohibitive due to excess vibrations created by the engine. Neither frame nor rider could handle it. That is why no one really puts CR500 engines in "R's". Has Service Honda found a way around this issue or am I way off?

they no stuff thats hard to do, if u can figure out bikes good, theyr ways to get it don, im not a mekanik, butt wood rubbr fix it:confused:

xanada is right, vibration would kill it. they would have to make some serious gussetting with bars here and there. just like the fischer cycles cr 250 that nathan dallas runs.

slapnutz learn to spell, lol.

11-25-2002, 03:49 PM
well service honda figured out a way to put cr500 motors in cr250 aluminum frames.. don't doubt them yet,,yes there's been headaches with vibration when doing these conversions..but your not dealing with jackleg and associates engine converters..:huh

service honda seems to have there chit together..the fisher cycle 250r won the 250A class this year I think..funny thing is..we've all been hearing sob stories about the 250r is gone,,bring it back,,it'll sell millions..now it's kinda gonna happen and everyones that was gonna put up,,is gonna shut up cuz they got what they asked for..a 250R LMFAO buy em up boys..:blah

I think the cost is a bit high but hey,,how bad did you guys say you wanted a new 250r?????

ill buy one, if i can buy just the engine...8k for a stock chassis is too much...

cheetah
11-25-2002, 04:29 PM
I might wanna buy just the engine. But that will probably be outrageous too. To get the quad version I mean.

motochris
11-25-2002, 04:42 PM
I was thinking about that.... Why doesnt someone just start building 250r's and sell them??? I'm sure they could build there own frames and maybe they could have a contract with Honda to get 250crate motors and put them in a custom frame......... Ya i'm dreaming ..................................:p

I do not know much about db motors so which would be faster in an ex frame, cr or r?

Ryan
11-25-2002, 04:49 PM
Well for 8,000 bucks they better also include the 400ex motor too. LOL . Im sure alot of people will buy them but that price is way to steep and would it still be legal to do that with all the laws about motorcycle engines in quads . I guess we must of won then.

I thought they banned new production 2 strokes.

11-25-2002, 05:07 PM
Sounds like a promosing idea (if true),..
& for those who have never ridden
a honda 2 stroke quad ..
Its a great place to start ..
with or w/o aftermarket suspension..:D

personally i think its the best thing i've heard in a long time...

only thing i think they should do is sale just the frame and motor... and them also sale the whole quad... bc most racers already have the decked out 400exs all we need to do is buy the frame and motor for lets say 2500$ to 3000$ and sale ours for 1500 and for 2g u got urself a nice new state of the art 250r:eek: they would sale more that way...

haha i'm a dumb@$$ i know

Ryan
11-25-2002, 05:14 PM
I would definitly buy one if they were about 6,000 or maybe 7,000 but I don't have that kinda money anyways. If I had more money and looking for a fast quad that would be what I would get. Or maybe a cannondale speed.

Just spoke to someone at service honda, they will not confirm or deny there is something pending . sounds like they are trying to keep the lid on it . but my gut feeling by the way he answered me was yes but not officially!!!if they could make it for under 7k and all parts where new honda I would buy 1 today!!!!!

does this mean honda cares about Quads ?

THEY IMPLIED IT WAS IN HOUSE AND NOT FACTORY , OFFICALLY THEY DID NOT TELL ME THAT!!!

Ryan

If dirt bikes or even crotch rockets, If they were not popular then honda wouldn't make them. All they want is the money!

Looks like we may have new 250R's running around, (kinda). I can't wait personally, I've been looking for a 250R for awile. But, I doubt I but a brand new one, I'd rather find a ragged out '88 and restore it. I do hope they can come up with some way to minimize the vibrations. My '98 CR250R was a real shaker, excellent power though.

look on the bright side, its not another 250cc quad, its not a z400 called a crfxzk400R, its not nearly as dumb as a 700cc twin 4-stroke auto with shaft drive and crap suspention.

11-25-2002, 09:38 PM
bump, this is pretty good info on new 250r?

11-25-2002, 09:51 PM
porlly wont come out until 450ex does, 450ex will be alot better selliing, yamah in new dirt wheels said they are making a yz450 or 425 or sumthing quad...

No Rico. I am about 20 minutes from those guys. I bought a quad from them to. Small place... They gave HORRIBLE SERVICE... Honda had to step in to make it right. They were just trying to swindle some jack$$. Wouldnt return calls. SCREW EM'

Sounds like a killer idea to me. DB motors aren't counterbalanced for some reason, so they vibrate a lot. However there must be ways around it. Kawasaki built that XC quad with the kx250 motor in it. Had rubber motor mounts or something. It couldn't have been that bad if Ballance rode it for 2 hours on end each race...

I think it kinda cool except why make it look the same as the 400ex, make something freakin different. They would make a crap load of money if they just bring back the original 250r with some tune ups like newer look and motor and stuff.they at least need to lower the price and make it not look like a 400

Nausty
11-25-2002, 11:07 PM
lol, With it being service honda I doubt they have done anything to overcome all the vibration you would have and for that price you could pry buy a new 400ex and then buy a stock cr250 motor and slap it in there and have a spare 400ex motor to boot. Wayyyy to steep in price for what it is considering they are just gonna sell the 400ex motors as replacemets for the same as they probably would strait from honda.

Too many predictions, need facts
I'm just gonna watch and see what happens on this one, could be a nice quad (cr250r power :D o yea!!), might not be ( :( ).
Need more facts before we start ruleing this possible quad out.
I like the idea though! I just hope it may be counter-balanced (somehow) with a strong frame...

The vibration is one of the reasons why its not being raced anymore. Yokley said it vibrated quite abit and after every race they had to check and retighten all the loose bolts
