polaris starting problem

My dad just bought a 98 polaris 300 and is having some starting trouble. Sometimes it cranks fine sometimes it dont. When it dont its not getting any fire. The previous owner changed the coil but that didn't help. I haven't had a chance to look it over and wanted to see if any of yall have ran into this. Thanks

i had a polaris predator 90 and twice my stator got so messed up from mud and water getting onto it it wouldnt start and had to replace the stator. very poor design
