do you recommend the keys to advance the timing. my 400ex is stock. also, where do these keys go. i am unfamilar with these things. any help would be great. thanks

Yes, on a stock engine, it will help. It is installed at the flywheel, which is under the side plate.
It is a pretty quick procedure, should take less that a half hour and the additional price of a cover gasket.

can these hurt the engine in any way? they are pretty cheap. sparks has them for like $15.

You should be safe on a stock engine. It is when you have a big bore and/or a high compression piston is when the problem occures. With the timing advance it creates a little more heat.
