Do you ever really get to open it up? My dad has a 400 and I have a 450R... there was a huge difference between my old 300 and the 400. Between the 450R and my dad;s 400EX i haven't noticed much just wide open i am flying lol. Trails stock for stock the 400EX is better. My 450R is modded out for MX, my dad's 400 is modded for trails.

I own both, so this is first hand information.

The EX lugs down great, and makes its power down low. That makes it the all time best trail quad, along with its little brother the 300EX. It is especially great when you need to ride slow and pick your way through more technical terrain. I can put mine in 1st gear, and just idle through the nasty stuff...absolute perfection! It's no slouch on the top end either....

The R is all rev! It makes its power way up in the rpm range, and it is best ridden reved out. Plus, they gear them tall. This makes it a bad choice for riding slow on technical trails. Even with some gearing changes, mine goes 25 mph in 1st gear. If I have to ride it on tight slow trails, there is lots of annoying clutch slipping involved.

So, if you are a tight trail rider, the EX is the way to go! If you ride more open faster trails and wide open country, then the R will get you there the fastest!

me and my older bro race mx and i am on a 400ex in open b and my bro is on 450 in open c. my 400 will hang with the top bikes (all 450's) in c class but in b i am around mid to rear on the pack. if you race mx dot make the mistake of getting a 400. however trails i would get a 400.

I have both also but I think reconranger must have an 04 or 05 450r because the newer ones are not as top end bias

the 400ex is better if you want to put put through trails, and it is very capable when flying through the trails and the reliability is as good as it gets

but the 450r screams, the 06+ has no problem with low end torque for hill climbs or creek crossings etc.

your question about power.........................

stock for stock and mod for mod the 400 vs 450 is about the same
as the 300 vs 400

in the woods you can use most of the power of the 400 but with the 450 you will have more than enough

get to the straights or dunes and the 450 runs away with it

well i currently have a 400 i race mx and trailride sometimes and i love the 400 on the trails but i run 450 c and its my second year racin and i finish 2 and 3 in every race and i just have a slip on, so i figured instead of puttin alot of money in to the 400 i might as well gohead and get the 450 for the power an ddump money in to that

that changes things...get a 450r, but realize that they are a different animal in the handling dept. it seemed like it took me forever to get comfortable on the 450r

you are right about the comfortable thing. once i did (thx to bros bike) i feel like i should have always been on one of these. jumping is a lot more predictable on a 450.I have built my motor top to bottom(excluding big bore) and dragged a 450. i beat him all the way to 5th and he slowly passed me. the things is... it was bone stock. if he was jetted and piped he would have beat me.

Austin, you need to tell us what type of riding you do.
