Do i need to use a ring compressor or can I do it by hand?

you can do it by hand it is just a little bit harder

less chance of damaging rings with the tool. but its not worth it if you dont have one. just b real careful;)

I bought the tool just so it gets done right the first time.

Just do it by hand its just a little harder but isnt too bad.

i always do it by hand. cut myself real bad once though on a ring. running my finger around it while putting pressure on it.

Hose clamp is about 1.50 at home depot. Works a charm.
