If you use 400ex a-arms on a 300ex you have to relocate the shocks but if you use 250r a-arms you don't have to relocate the shocks?

You would still need to relocate your upper shock mount. unless of course you want to run 300ex shocks:D

exactly. the 250r a arms and 400ex are very similar. 86/87 250r a arms are the best for a 300ex conversion front end. I even have some if you want to make me an offer it also will come with 400ex shocks

o yea the reason they are the best is because they are not +1 forward so your stock brakelines arnt going to bind

I found this info in some old posts when I did the search...

250xman posted this thread- "you wont need the braket if you use 250R shocks, thats only for 400 shocks. the R's shocks are 14 inches and the 400's are 18".

Live2Ride300 posted this thread- "I used 400EX A-arms, 400 tie rods, and works dual rate 250R front shocks. It worked out great, I didnt have to relocate the shock mount. 400ex stock shocks are 16inches long".

So do you need the relocating mount or not?

FALSE.....250R and 400EX shocks are exactly the same length! The only difference between the two shocks is the 250R shocks have a progressive rate spring and the 400ex doesn't!!!

You will need a bracket!

Thanks Jeff I thought 250r shocks were shorter. I put 250r works shocks on my 400 and I couldn't see any difference. It's just something I've always heard.

The 400ex shocks are much better. but if you want the 250r shocks i have them too. Actualy jeff. the 400ex shocks are about 1/2 to 1/4 longer then 250r shocks. they are both around 16 inches long. Aftermarket 400ex or 250r shocks will measure 16 1/8 long. LT shocks are 19 1/8. The 250r shocks do seem to have a progressive spring but the 400ex shock is still better. especialy the rear shocks

This may sound stupid but what is a progressive rate shock? Don't laugh. And Live2Ride300 posted a pic in that post and his looked alright without the bracket, how di dhe do that.

Jeff, how much higher do I need to move the new mount?

I recently found out that my shocks wernt 250R shocks, the person I bought them from said they were 250R shocks. Im guessing they are 300 works shocks. If you dont feel like dealing with the bracket just get some 300 works shocks and get them valved to the 400 a-arms. Im having mine rebuilt, revalved and ssd is being added. I cant wait to get them back, i'll post some pics when I do.

u can fit the shock on w/ out moving the mount but it ruins the ball juints.well the thing on the aamrs cuz the front end is so high

i dont seehow those 300ex shocks would work with the 400ex a-arms, when i put my 300ex shocks in wit the 400 a-arms it was level to the ground. Those works would have to be lengthened to be the right size. And if you make the new mounts right i done see any reason that it would ruin the ball joints, mine actually sits a bit lower than normal.
