symptoms of needing valve adjustment?

what are some of the symptoms of knowing you need to adjust your valves?

just curious because im not sure i need it done but its a simple fix if i do need too

louder "ticking" than usually, loss of power. Those are what i know. Or if you here a slaping, its hard to explain you would have to have heard it before or something to probally know its your valves. Normally its louder noise coming from the top of the motor.
