I am going to be splitting the cases on my locked up 450 to put a crank in it. Is there a certain order I should take it apart, or just jump in there and do it. I guess my biggest worry is splitting them and everything falling out on the table and not knowing where is goes.n Is it better to lay it on its side when you pull them apart? Do I need any special tools?

take your time,... get a few specialty tools,... and GOOD LUCK!

If you know someone that has done this before, try to get them to help. Buying a manual might not hurt either. I have watched this done, there are a lot of parts in there. take pictures of everything you take off and in order if you have to.

Get a service manual for sure.
It has step by step directions.
Theres a lot of little parts in there, and it will give u pointers on how to open the case's with out everything falling in ur lap.

Definitely get the manual, there are a lot more little parts, pins, clips, washers than you would think. Dont rush it and when you put it back together make sure the balancer shaft is lined up with the water pump.;)
