how much of a difference, speed wise and lap-time wise, should i notice on a 250f from my 400ex. i know i'll be able to jump a lot further than on my quad, thats the main reason im getting one, but what about speed and acceleration and corners?

a friend of my brother and i has a yz250f and we both have 400ex's. i can tell you that the acceleration on 250 four strokes is just ridiculous. if you can utilize the acceleration and speed, you'll be leaps and bounds ahead.

Same, have a friend with a yz250f and the first time I rode it I was shocked for its power and acceleration being "just" a 250.

i have rode dirt bikes for over 6 years. speed and acceleration are going to be better, it takes time and practice to get good at cornering a dirt bike. but in the end, yes you are gonna be faster. a 250f is a good starter bike too. the 450 bikes are just insanely fast.

Im pretty sure my buddys stock yz250f is faster than my 450 with full system n wiseco piston.

I think the 400ex and a crf150r would be comparable. So the 250 is going to be even faster .....

powerwise the 250f is going to be more. They put down around 35ish give or take, but they are tons lighter than a quad. I like the 4 strokes and all, but I'm pretty sure I'm done racing for a while, so I'm going to stick to the 2 smokes for a bike. The 200sx I have will stay right with 450f's off the gate to the first turn without a problem. On long straights they kill me though. On the other hand now that the "125" class has been turned into lites C, I can run my 200 against the 250f's! I'd like to but I need to see how things look time wise and financially this summer.

Either way, you can't go wrong with a 250f.

i have a ttr230 nowere near as fast as a 250f but on a race my 230 would be close to my piped 400ex , those newer 250fs loved to be revved and accell and handle alsome

what about reliablilty. ive been told honda is the most reliable by several people, but on average how reliable are they? i want to race it and ride a lot but i dont want to have to work on it all the time.

those 250f hondas are getting better reliability wise. dirt bikes are very fun. i like riding the ktm. its definitely a animal. way more power then my 400ex and even my R.

IMO, as far as reliability, i havent heard bad things about any of them, but as far as which 250f is the best, according to racer x, the kawasaki was in 06, yamaha and kawasaki tied in 07, and the honda was in 08. ive rode the 06 KTM 250SX-F, 04 YZ250F, 06 CRF250R, and a 06 KX250F, and personally i like the kawi the best. it had a strong motor, suspension was great, but the handlebars my buddy liked made it feel a little funny. the yamaha had good suspension, but the motor was a bit flat. the KTM had the best motor, but it locked up about a year after he got it. and the honda did evverything good, but not as good as the kawi.

Just from personal experience/experiences of my friends, the honda's eat valves hardcore. I'm not sure about the 08's, but most of the guys I know with 07's and under have had some sort of valve train problem. You really can't go wrong with any of the newer 250f's, but from what I've ridden, the rmz and yzf are the way to go. rmz handles great. Everyone hypes up the honda's handling, but I like the rmz better. It turns so sharp and quick. The yzf is also a good bike, but like I said you can't really go wrong with any of them, but the honda would be towards the bottom on my list.

Only the 2004 models were notorious for eating valves. everyone recommends putting new valves in all the manufactrures motors, especially on a 250f. i have a 2006 model honda crf 250r and i havent had a lick of problems at all. its all stock in the motor and thats plenty of power.
