Since it seems the number issue surround 400ex's is heat and only being cooled with that small oil cooler..

i was thinkin of not only adding a SPAL fan but going ahead and removing that oil cooler for a little larger but much better cooler.

im sure this has been done since these bikes have been around for almost 10yrs..

so just want to know what oil cooler people use etc and how much it helps..i dont want to add another cooler inline just remove and reinstall a new better cooler with fan

ive found quite a few oil coolers for cars n such ranging from all different sizes but i dont want to get something i think that will perform better and end up performing worse..

so plz through out some info

ONLY if uve done this or have proof etc..i dont want bs of what u heard ur friends uncles great aunt did back in the day and worked great... thanks.. :D

I havent seen coolers(but im sure they are out there) but there are aftermarket oil tanks that are larger and have cooling holes machined into them. Its another alternative...

I have seen CBR 600 coolers being used but not sure where.

There is a secondary oil cooler which taps into the head and somewhere else. It's probably the best cooling device for the 400ex. FST makes it.

yea i believe after researching i saw that one..however id really like to just replace the oem cooler with a bigger better cooler then through a SPAL fan on that..

after a few measurements...i realized theres not much space there..

i think the max size ill got with is 9"w x 5"h x unknown d

i think id do 1.5" d but just not positive..also i believe id go with the 5.2" spal pull fan..

EDIT: much reading leaves me thinking theres not a whole lot of options

all the coolers i originally was lookin at are to large for the area i want to place it..

so i guess im pretty much stuck gettin the same type of cooler just a little bit larger..

which may even end up being the cbr1100 cooler
although i think with more research i can find something better

i was reading about the stacked plate design which is what the 400ex has and read they dont have great air flow..so i was lookin into the perma-cool brand which is like a tube/fin cooler but better which has great air flow like the tube/fin but better heat dissipation and great oil flow..
however i cant find one small enough to fit in the area provided..

also anyone with a stock cooler that upgraded..is the difference noticable ..did u do any testing of temps? etc..thanks for the info :D

I used to have a CBR cooler, now I'm running the stock oil cooler again with a Spal fan.

The CBR cooler did make a noticable difference in engine temps, but the width and height of the cooler create some fitament issues with the return line and front fender supports.

The Spal fan is fairly easy to install, and doesn't look out of place. From what I've experienced so far the Spal fan will be superior to the CBR cooler, not to mention the advantage of extra cooling on demand.

definitely..

i actually started lookin at this
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=EAR%2D21610ERL&N=700+4294924500+4294839034+4294888847+4294782868+ 4294782774+4294888846+115&autoview=sku

it should fit pretty well in that area being only a couple inces taller
and about the same width
however it has 16rows and with a spal fan on that..i think it would be an incredible difference

the only thing i need to figure out is what size fittin the stock cooler uses ..the one posted is -10 AN but they have different size fittings so i just used this as an example

I would love for my 400 to run cooler.
I like this idea with a spal if anybody can figure out what the size of the fittings are

I also like the secondary oil cooler kit from FST because its designed for the 400. Do you think you run the spal fan with that as well??

Hey Wheelie...

You have the 4" fan, right? Does that work fine with the stock cooler on the 440 or do you think the 5.2" would be better? Also, you think you could post some pics of the install? I'm looking to do the same thing this summer, but I'm torn b/w the 4" and the 5.2"

FWIW--I now have results of the SPAL fan due to my dune trip last weekend.

There is no comparison between the CBR cooler and the SPAL fan, the SPAL fan does a much better job of keeping my quad cool. I don't have any hard numbers temperature wise, but the SPAL fan makes quite a dramatic difference in how my quad runs (no power fade due to heat), and the machine runs alot cooler.

The 4" is perfect and moves plenty of air with minimal load on the charging system. IMO--the 5.2" will be harder to mount cleanly, the amount of air it moves would be overkill, and the amp draw would be a concern.

Fittings? What for?

I left my stock oil cooler and lines alone and installed the fan behind it.

Have you got any pics of it mounted?
