different kinds of killswitches?

i hooked my kiilswitch up and it works opposite. if i have the tether in it shuts off and iff i take it out it runs? that is the only way it will do anything any way else i hook it up it doesn;t do anything? are there different kinds of killswitches and maybe i have the wrong kind. i'm not sure wat brand it is it looked like the TUSK ones from rockymountain.
