Cousins 2003 400EX has a nasty top end tick. Valves are to spec, .04, and .05? What else to look for? I'm thinking cam chain, is there any way to check without pulling the head off?

Runs fine, but ticks like a time bomb, and I'm affraid at this point thats what it is. The top end was replaced under warrenty in 04, and has not had too many miles since then.

Could it be the oil, since he has not changed it in some time, maybe it is spent, and not lubricating like it should? I don't know, any suggestions would be great. Thanx.

they all tick as i am sure you are aware of. i was told once to check the copper header gaskets. i checked mine and replaced them and it did quiet them down a bit

No, this is something that has just started this spring, and it is quit loud.

I will check the header gaskts, thank you.

I do not beleive I have metric feeler guages, but I will doublecheck.

Any way to check the cam chain for stretch, without reomving the head?

Yes, .004, and .005. They were still there, I did not need to adjust them.

From what I've read, it might be a cam chain, or worn rocker arm. How would I check these, and can it be done without removing the whole engine from the frame?
