I have a 400ex right now, and am thinking of switching over to a 450r.

Would someone please give me any details of any additional maintenance required.

I already clean air filter after every ride and change oil every 5-10 hours.

I know the valves are ALOT harder to adjust and wanted some input on how often they need to be adjusted.

Basically, how long can you ride a 450r with just basic maintenance without anything going wrong?

I just hear a lot about their valves and how you really have to stay on top of them. This topic might be better suited for the 450r thread were they know 1st hand.

The 450r has tranny fluid and oil that need to be changed they are not the same like ours.

He posted the question in the 450 forum, so you can see my comments there. Actually, while the 400EX will take a lot of abuse, it too benifits from fairly frequent oil changes and high quality synthetic oil...so you don't get a free ride no matter what engine you have.

The 450 (quad and dirt bike) is the king of the long distance desert endurance races like Baja and Vegas to Reno (you know, start it up and ride 1000 miles non-stop!), so there is no doubt that the 450 engine can go the distance!!!

You won't really need to worry about your valves going out of spec if you maintain your air filter very well. That is the biggest reason for valves going out of adjustment.

The R is just like every other quad and you should change the oil frequently.

There are plenty of 450rs with hundreds and hundreds of hours without any valve adjustments.

I went almost 2 years without adjusting mine. I checked them often, but they were always in spec.

Now go out and buy one.... You won't regret it!!

Thanks guys, very useful information. I guess its time to pass the barely 5 month old ex'er down to the dad or little brother.

I definitely want to soon... Hopefully this week I can get it dyno tuned. Depends on how booked they are. I am hoping to drop it off Wednesday on my day off and pick it up on Friday. We'll see....

That DASA sounds soooo sick!! Loud as ***** though.... Louder and deeper than my old HMF.

But it looks amazing!!
